Description	:	EDGECOMBE, JOHN F. SR.—John F. Edgecombe, Sr., long-time publisher and owner of the Nebraska Signal in Geneva, died after a battle with cancer. Edgecombe, 72, died at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva on Wednesday, Sept 20. John carried on the tradition of The Nebraska Signal, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, Frank O. and Tyler, respectively. Frank O. purchased the Geneva Republican and the Geneva Journal in 1894. It was in 1896, that F.O. purchased The Nebraska Signal in Fairmont, and moved it to Geneva, where the other Geneva newspapers were merged. Tyler, John’s father, joined The Signal staff in 1913, with John following in 1947. John became co--publisher in 1954, and became publisher after the death of his father in 1972. John Franklin Edgecombe Sr. was born to Tyler M. Edgecombe and Gladys H. (Dingman) Edgecombe on September 11, 1923, at Geneva, and passed away September 20, 1995, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 72 years and 9 days. He was one of four children in the family. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1941, and attended Chillicothe Business School in Missouri and then spent three years in the Army Air Force. He also attended the University of Missouri’s Linotype School. Like his grandfather, F. O., and father, Tyler, John Sr. became interested in the Nebraska Press Association. He served on various committees for many years. He served as president of the Nebraska Press Advertising Service in 1964, and later served as president of the Nebraska Press Association in 1971. John was married to Bette L. Uhlig of Geneva, on March 29, 1943, and to them three children were born. John, Joseph and Jan, and Carlos Zenteno, an AFS student who lived with the couple. In 1977, Service Press and the Henderson News were purchased, which is where John spent his remaining years of work. He officially retired from business in 1990. John was a Geneva Mason and a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Geneva Methodist Church, past president of the Chamber of commerce, a past member of Geneva Rotary, the Geneva fire department and other civic organizations. John was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Tyler. He is survived by his wife, Bette; sons, John Jr. and wife, Jo Ann; Joe and wife Judy; Carlos Zenteno; daughter, Jan and husband Glen; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Arlene McShane, Mary Chandler, and Jean Elam; nieces and nephews. Memorial services were conducted from the Geneva Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 23, with Pastor Charles Leypoldt officiating.
