Two other children of the dead woman were critically injured. Dead are: Mrs. Betty Imogene Elkins, 43; Frankie Robert, 10; William Edward, 5, and Kathy, 16. Listed in critical condition at St. Anthony Hospital are Ted, age 9, and his 11-year-old brother, Terry Wayne. Mrs. Elkins , widow of the late Albert Lester Elkins, who died in 1968, had recently moved from rural West Terre Haute to Paris, Ill. Vigo County Sheriff George Albright said the fatal crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m. Deputy Sheriff Jake Gess, who was first to arrive on the scene said that all six passengers in the auto were thrown out. The freight train, Gess said was eastbound enroute to Indianapolis at between 40 and 50 miles per hour at the time of the crash. The deputy further stated the Elkins auto was southbound and pulled onto the crossing. Foster Holmes was the conductor of the train and W. S. Kyle was the engineer. Kyle told officers the auto pulled onto the tracks and remained there. Kyle also said the flashers were in operation at the time the Elkins auto pulled onto the tracks. Gess said that relatives of the family said that Mrs. Elkins and her five children had left home enroute to West Terre Haute. Other officers at the scene in addition to Sheriff Albright and Gess were Deputy Bobby Lawson and Detective Larry Peters. Other survivors in addition to the two critically injured sons are, four daughters, Miss Nila Elkins, Terre Haute, Mrs. Susie Norton, Lebanon, Mrs. Christina Allen, Terre Haute, and Cindy Elkins, at home; two sons, Albert Lawrence Elkins, Terre Haute and Jimmy Elkins, at home; Mrs. Elkins mother, Mrs. Bethel Liffick, West Terre Haute; Mrs. Elkins brother, Tom Liffick, West Terre Haute; Mrs. Elkins sister, Mrs. Helen Bishop, West Terre Haute, and another grandmother, Mrs. Myrtle Kiger of Rockville. Services for Mrs. Elkins and her three children are pending at the Bedino Chapel of the Valley.
