Otis and Lula Russell Hopkins was born on August 17, 1935, in rural Laurel, Iowa. She was a graduate of Mingo High School. On July 6, 1953, Betty married Myron Rhone in Marshalltown, Iowa. They were the parents of five children, James, Jane, Julie, Jerry, and Jody. Betty was a homemaker. She was an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church being in the Chime Choir, Church Choir, helped with Bible School, Past UMW President, Youth Leader and helped with funeral lunches. She also participated in Melody Unlimited, Jasper Co. Choir, Skiff Hospital Auxiliary, RSVP Volunteer, Tops Club, Red Hat, Card Club, and Square Dance Club. She was a Past PTA President, Cub Scout Den Mother, and Campfire Leader. Betty enjoyed bowling. Betty died on Friday, June 28, 2019, at her home in Newton. She was 83. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, son, James “Jim” Rhone; son-in-law, Mark Jansen; grandson, James “Jamie” Rhone; great-grandson, Nolan Rhone; three sisters, Vida Hopkins, Thelma Hopkins, and Velta Davies; and brother Kenneth Hopkins. Survivors include her husband, Myron of Newton; children, Jane Jansen of Cedar Falls, Julie (Gary) Hanson of Newton, Jerry Rhone of Newton, and Jody (Ericka) Rhone of Newton; eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; sister Vela (Max) Bucklin of Ira, and many nieces and nephews.
