Betty Jane Strotman was born on March 25, 1931, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Leslie William and Amanda Marie (Miller) Strotman. Read More	Betty Arns, 84, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Thursday, June 4, 2015, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of natural causes. Betty Jane Strotman was born on March 25, 1931, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Leslie William and Amanda Marie (Miller) Strotman. Betty was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. Betty attended the Waverly school system, graduating in 1949, from Waverly High School. She was employed at Ecker's Floral for the next two years. On June 17, 1951, Betty was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Roland "Rollie" Arns at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. After their wedding the couple made their home in Ames where Rollie continued his schooling at Iowa State. In 1953, the couple moved back to Waverly for nine months, until Rollie entered the U.S. Army. They made several moves until Rollie was discharged in March 1956. The couple moved back to Waverly to farm northwest of Bremer and in 1962, they moved to Rollie's home farm south of Bremer, where they raised hogs and dairy cattle until 1992, when they retired. Betty also worked at Hy-Vee Floral in Waverly from 1986 until she retired in 2011. Rollie died on December 20, 2011, and Betty continued to live in her home until January 2013 when she became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community. Betty was a faithful servant of God, teaching Sunday School and Bible School at both Trinity and Warren United Methodist Churches in Waverly. Betty was also very involved with the 4-H program. She was recognized as a 50 year leader of B-Square 4-H Club, and she was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. She enjoyed teaching crafts to senior citizens and attending all of her children's and grandchildren's sporting events. She was also active in many other local organizations including Farm Bureau Women, Bremer County Home Board, and Go-Hawk Booster Club. She was inducted into the Volunteer Hall of Fame, and she and Rollie were Grand Marshalls at the Waverly Heritage Days. Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Betty is survived by her 7 children and their spouses, Mary Engstrom of Postville, Teri (Arnold) Emberton of Hamburg, Nancy (Allen) Behrens of Hudson, Illinois, Tom (April) Arns of Waverly, Dave (Ann) Arns of Waverly, Lori (Andrew) Cory of Elkhart, Jen (Rod) Rodenbeck of Waverly; 19 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Les and Amanda Strotman; her husband of 60 years, Rollie; 5 sisters, Margaret Beebe, Mary Warrior, Muriel Nasby, Shirley Clatterbaugh and Beverly Dietrich; and 4 brothers, Stanley, Jim, Dale and Bruce Strotman; a son-in-law, Roger Engstrom; and a great grandson, Gabriel Behrens. Celebration of Life Services will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly, with Pastor Deborah Coble-Wise officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Monday, June 8th 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to B-Square 4-H Club. Online condolences for Betty's family may be left at www.kaisercorson.com. She has been a leader to over 500 girls and has had as many as 54 members at one time. Betty is a big supporter of communications at the club, county, and state level. Six of her seven children went to State Fair with communications. She has been Bremer County Fair Horticulture and Communications superintendent for many years and has judged communications, food and nutrition, and horticulture at county and state level. Betty and her husband Roland bought a brick at the entrance to the 4-H Exhibit Building at the State Fair, and they received an Iowa 4-H Foundation Award as an Investor in the Development of Youth. Betty says: “We are an “Old Fashioned Club’. We still do clothing, home improvement, and food and nutrition rotation. Through the years, I have had the club at my home making pies, making homemade bread, and learning how to sew on a button many times. Children need to learn the simple things: sewing on a button is the same today as it was when 4-H started 100 years ago. I have taught many 4-H’ers the easy way to know how to set the table. Left has four letters so anything with four letters – fork, bowl, and dish, go on the left. Right has five letters so anything with five letters – knife, spoon, and glass, go on the right. That is so easy to remember.” This year the Bremer County Fair is having a 4-H 100th Birthday Party, and Betty has volunteered to bake 1000 cupcakes to serve at the party. That exemplifies Betty, always ready and willing to help wherever and whenever needed. Betty has many great memories and stories to tell from her 4-H leader years.
