She spent her childhood years near Grand River and graduated from Murray High School in 1944. She taught in rural schools for several years, also Nodaway and Melbourne. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1952. She was united in marriage to Lawrence B. Wetzler on August 28. 1952 at Macksburg. To this union were born four children. David. Janet, Sharon and Barbara. They lived in Des Moines for four years, then moved to Mitchellville where they have since resided. Betty was active in Girl Scouts, serving as a leader for 12 years She received the first award ever given for the Moingona Council for her work directly with the girls in scouting. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; son, David and wife, Kathy; daughter, Janet Overlin and husband, Lyle, Sharon Wetzler and Barbara Wetzler, all of Mitchellville, two grandsons, Jeremy and Andrew Wetzler. Also her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Shields of Grand River; four sisters. Alice Herrold of Iowa Falls, Hazel Newton of Atlantic. Cleone Woughter of Depew, New York and Virginia Howard of Cheyene,Wyoming; three brothers, Edgar Shields and Joe Shields of Grand River and Jasper Shields of Cache, Oklahoma, other relatives and friends. A Memorial for the Girl Scouts has been established in her name.
