The event will be from 2:00 until 4 30 p.m. at the Grand River Legion-Lions Hall with a short program planned for 2:30 p.m. Mr. Shields and the former Pearl Briner were married April 21, 1926 at Grand Island, Nebraska. Hosts will be their children: Mrs. Lawrence (Betty) Wetzler, Mitchellville; Mrs. Harvey (Alice) Herrold, Iowa Falls; Edgar and Joseph, Grand River; Mrs. Hugh (Hazel) Newton, Atlantic; Jasper, Cache, Oklahoma; Mrs. Tom (Cleone) Woughter, Depew, New York; Mrs. Stephen (Virginia) Howard, Savannah, Missouri. In addition to their eight children, they have 33 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. All relatives and friends are invited The couple requests no gifts. 1976 27 Apr 1976 The Osceola Tribune Osceola Newspaper Nelson Shields Celebrate Anniv [The Digital Archives of the Osceola Public Library] Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Shields of Grand River celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 18 at the Legion-Lions Hall in Grand River with 180 registered at the guest book. Granddaughters were in charge of the guest book, gifts, and the reception table which was centered with a three-tiered anniversary cake, baked and decorated by granddaughter, Mrs. David (Kathy) Wetzler. A short program was given by their children and grandchildren. A reading "Golden Wedding Day" by Hazel Newton and Virginia Howard; recollections of the couple's 50 years together by Alice Herrold, during which each of the children presented their mother with a long stemmed yellow rose and then in turn introduced their own families. Musical selections by grandchildren Richard, Robert, and Linda Herrold and Patricia Lange concluded the program. A highlight of the day was that all eight children, 33 grandchildren, and four of the five great grandchildren were present. Memorial service were held Wednesday, December 12 at the United Methodist Church in Grand River with the Rev Walter Zarr officiating the 2-00 p.m. Rites. Goldie Pearls Shields was born near Grand River, Decatur County on March 26, 1906 to Jasper Briner and Delia Metts. She attended schools in Decatur County and married Nelson Shields on April 21, 1926 in Grand Island, Nebraska. Eight children were born to this union. She worked as a housewife and was a member of the 4-H Club of Grand River and the Grand River United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Nelson of Grand River; daughter, Alice Herrold and husband, Harvey of Iowa Falls, son, Edgar Shields and wife, Beth of Grand River; son, Joe Shields and wife, Ramadean of Grand River; daughter, Hazel Newton and husband, Hugh of Atlantic; son, Jasper Shields and wife, Lucille of Cache, Oklahoma, daughter, Cleone Woughter and husband, Tom of Depew, New York; daughter, Virginia Howard and husband, Stephen of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 33 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and a brother, Homer Briner and wife, Velma of Cambria.
