She was born February 23, 1924 in Anderson, Indiana, the first of three children of Clarence and Mayme Tumulty. Raised in Hartwell, Betty grew into a beautiful young lady. While attending Hartwell High School, Betty met Milton Hogue who fell in love with her. They were married Feb. 16, 1941 before Milton shipped out for WWII. Betty and Milton gave birth to five children: Alan, Gary, Linda, Susan, and Marilyn. Milton's' untimely death in 1955 left Betty a widow with 5 young children. Not long after, Betty married Douglas Slusher and they had a son, Doug. Together they raised 6 children in Hamilton. In 1987 Betty endured the untimely death of her eldest son Alan, and just 3 months later the death of husband Doug following a brief illness. A couple of years later, she met and married Carl Hurst (4/1/89) who was diagnosed with cancer and died within the first 2 years of their marriage. Throughout Carl's illness Betty lovingly cared for him, while Carl's friend Ralph Seckel provided supportive friendship. Following Carl's death, Ralph and Betty married (10/26/91) and enjoyed several years together and some wonderful trips before Ralph's health failed, and Betty provided devoted care until his death in 1998. By this time Betty thought her days of "nursing" ailing husbands were over, but when Milton's sister told her Hartwell High friend Howard Geisen was critically ill and discouraged, Betty visited. It was not long till a rejuvenated Howard proposed marriage, and Howard and Betty enjoyed life together for several years until Howard's death in 2005. Betty is survived by her brother Keith Tumulty (Fla.), 5 children, 9 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, as well as many step children, step-grandchildren, and step great-grandchildren to whom she was faithfully devoted. The family is especially thankful to step-daughter Janice (Seckel) Dehner whose love and support were vital during Betty's later years. Betty's life was filled with great sorrow, hard work, and deep love. Her faith in Jesus Christ, her participation in church, especially the Lindenwald United Methodist Church, kept her going during very trying times. As in Proverbs 31, Betty's family and friends rise up and call her blessed. "Many women have done excellently, but you, Mom, surpass them all. You will be greatly missed." A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, June 21 at 11:00 am at the Lindenwald United Methodist Church following private interment at Rose Hill Cemetery June 20. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent in Betty's name to Lindenwald United Methodist Church.
