Description	:	Betty L. Bumgarner was born to Clarence W. Caton and Mary I. Van Patten Caton on June 4, 1929, at Grafton, and passed away September 23, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, at the age of 81 years, three months and 19 days. She was one of ten children in the family. Betty lived in Grafton from 1929 until her family moved to Geneva where she graduated from Geneva High School in 1946. Bumgarner was born to Clarence W. Caton and Mary I. She was one of ten children in the family. Betty lived in Grafton from 1929 until her family moved to Geneva where she graduated from Geneva High School in 1946. She studied business for a short time in Kansas City and then returned to Geneva and worked at Geneva State Bank. Betty was married to Mervell Bumgarner of Strang on August 15, 1948, and to them four children were born. Betty and Mervell lived on a farm outside of Strang, where she raised their family. In April of 1980, they moved into their dream house they had built in Geneva. Betty lived there until her death. Betty was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ for over 60 years, where she was an active member of the Women’s Fellowship and in her early years taught Sunday school to preschoolers for 23 years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron; member of the Daughters of the Nile and Guardian for Jobs Daughters. She was also a member of PEO, Strang Sewing Club, County Extension Club and charter member of Football Unlimited. She loved gardening and canning the fruits of her labor. She enjoyed embroidering towels, and quilt blocks and taking care of the flowers in her garden and listening to music. Her greatest love was her family her husband, children and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed the years she and Mervell spent during winters with a great group of their friends in Arizona. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Mary Caton, brothers, Ralph, Frank, Paul and Winford Canton; sisters, Gladys Benway, Dorothy Rice, Daisy Fifer, Phyllis Fox, and Tina Faye; and many aunts and uncles. She is survived by her husband, Mervell; daughters Charlotte, Carolyn Lees and husband Doug, Sharon Lauber and husband, Jerry; son Tom and wife Vicki; grandchildren, Jennifer and Brent Blau, Chad Bumgarner, Todd and Meghan Bumgarner, Jessica and Justin Brinkmeyer, and Joshua and Maggie Lees; great-grandchildren; McKensi, Brooklyn and Treyton Blau, Iris and Lydia Bumgarner and Kayin Brinkmeyer. Funeral services for Betty were held on September 27, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Todd Bumgarner officiating. Carolyn Lees played the prelude and benediction of “May the Lord.” Charlotte Bumgarner accompanied Rick Brandt in the singing of “The Lord’s Prayer,” “The 23rd Psalm,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Cindy Schwaninger played the postlude. Pallbearers for the service included Chad and Todd Bumgarner, Joshua Lees, Justin Brinkmeyer, Brent Blau and Marty Schademan. Interment was held in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
