He died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at a local health care facility following a long illness. He was born July 7, 1920, in Great Falls, Mont., to Herman and Marjorie Garske. His family moved to Anaconda, Mont., for two years before moving to Chico in 1939. He graduated from Chico High School. He worked in the family-owned Garske's Super Creamed Ice Cream Store on Main Street until he went in to the Army, where he served four years during World War II in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he returned to working in the ice cream store and later assumed ownership until 1955. On May 10, 1942, he married Juanita Owens. She died in 1997. Garske retired from the city of Chico meter department in 1985. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Chico. He enjoyed being with family and friends and participating in their numerous activities. He also enjoyed going ocean fishing in T4inidasd with his son, Ronald, who was a commercial fisherman and helping his daughter, Deborah, at the Farmer's Market. He lived hunting deer and elk in Montana with his nephew, Larry Antonich. Survivors include three sons, Ronald and Richard, both of Chico, and Randall of Oroville; a daughter, Deborah Landrith of Capay; two sisters, Betty Biddle of Loon Lake, Wash., and Lois Borgen of Chico; and six grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagles Aerie No. 218, 1940 Mulberry St., Chico. Arrangements are under the direction of the Neptune Society of Northern California, Chico Branch.
