Steider and Jeannetta Knutzen Steider on July 31, 1941, at Shickley, and passed away June 12, 1991, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 49 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was one of five children in the family. Billy was raised on a farm near Shickley. He spent his early years learning about hard work and a job well done, something he practiced his entire life. From 1955 to 1957 the family moved several times, eventually settling in Geneva. While in Geneva, he attended Geneva Public High School. In 1959 he started to learn the plumbing trade while working for Pet Garrett. On March 5, 1961, Billy was inducted into the United States Air Force where he served for four years. His first three years were spent in Germany and Spain and his last year in Dover, Del. He received his honorable discharge on March 5, 1965. Upon returning to Geneva, he went to work for Dean Garrett and remained there until Dean passed away. He then worked for Everett Renken for two years. In 1978 Billy and Babe Starr started up Husker Plumbing and Heating, Inc. This partnership lasted until 1987, when Billy took over sole ownership of the business. He always enjoyed his work and took pride in doing things right. He also owned and operated a trenching service on the side, through the years. Billy and Linda (Jurgens) Chase were married on July 1, 1982 in Geneva. They made their home in the house they built themselves. Billy didn’t have any children of his own, but enjoyed raising his step-daughter, Stacey Jon. His interests were many, but his nieces and nephews ranked at the top. Football was his favorite sport be it pro, college or high school. He liked working on cars whether it be re-doing an old one or just keeping the family car running. Woodworking was another part-time hobby along with helping Linda in the yard and garden. Billy enjoyed life in every way and was thankful for everyday he was given. He had said he didn’t know what God had in store for him, but it must be something great since he had been granted extra time on earth. He battled leukemia for many years and always kept looking up even during the toughest times. Billy was preceded in death by his father, William B. Steider and one brother, Donald F. Steider. He is survived by his wife, Linda; step-daughter, Stacy Jon Chase; mother, Jeannetta; two brothers, Larry and Jim; sister, Kay Carlson; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva, Saturday, June 15, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Wanda Bennett officiating. Mrs. Judy Ackland accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Ray Nichols who sang “My Way” and “Amazing Grace.” Pallbearers were Tom Hassler, Vern Johnson, Kurt Myers, Kent Myers, Vaden Myers and Ken Halbur. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal June 20th, 1991 page 1.
