Born on the farm near Edison, NE on December 20, 1922, Billy was a farmer for life. He attended the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture where he loved and excelled at baseball. He retired from the Edison Coop. Ida Cathern Chappell, born on the farm near Orleans, NE on August 28, 1932, graduated from Orleans High School and became a nurse's aide. In later years she was known for her baking skills while operating Ida's Place in Edison. Married for over 61 years, they were faithful members of the Edison Christian Church, and were active in many community groups and activities. Together they loved gardening and sharing the fruits of their labor. For several years in retirement Billy and Ida enjoyed maintaining the beauty of the Edison Cemetery. Billy Shafer is preceded in death by his parents John Robert and Velma Osborn Shafer; his brothers, Duane, Jack, Jerry and Don and sister Maxine Shafer Homer. Ida is preceded in death by her parents Jesse and Cathern Flanagan Chappell; stepfather Ira Chappell; her sisters, Louise Scharff, Josephine Schuster, Betty Cochrane, Mary Fruhling and Wauneta Chappell; her brothers, Marvin, Robert, Dale and Bill. Billy and Ida are survived by their daughters Kim (Casey) Crayne and Pamela (William) O'Donnell; granddaughter Erin Galvin; great-granddaughters, Olivia Cathern and Norah Jean Galvin; sisters, Janice Howman, Margie Ericksen, Arlene Smith, Phyllis Kantaras; brothers, Francis Shafer and Sam Shafer; in laws Wanda Chappell, Clarence Fruhling, Wendy Shafer, Richard Howman, Donna Shafer, Karol Shafer, Duane Ericksen, Colleen Shafer and Gladys Shafer and a host of other dear family and friends. A CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE will be held at the Edison Christian Church, Edison, Nebraska on Saturday, April 9, 2016 10:30am with interment at the Edison Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Friday, April 8, from 6-8pm at Mort's Lodge in Oxford.
