McKernan, 76, Emporia, died late Saturday, Aug. 25, at an Emporia hospital. Mrs. McKernan had been vice president of Bluestem Broadcasting Co. at Emporia several years. She was born Feb. 24, 1908, the daughter of George Lacy and LouElla Kelsall Phenicie. She attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence. She had lived at Emporia since 1957. She was recently named as a Paul Harris Fellow recipient by the Emporia Rotary Club. She was the first woman ever to receive the award in Emporia. Mrs. McKernan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the rosary altar society of the church, the Third Order of Franciscans, the Research Club and the auxiliary to St. Mary's Hospital, for which she was the past president, all at Emporia. She had been a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority at the University of Kansas. She was married to E. J. McKernan Jr. Dec. 20, 1930, at Topeka. He died Aug. 25, 1983. Survivors include a son, Edward J. McKernan III, Admire; two daughters, Sally Ann Nousek, Lyndhurst, Ohio and Mary Lou Klenke, San Antonio, Texas; a brother, George Lacy Phenicie, Mission; and 15 grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Emporia. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia.
