LUNDBERG, BANKER DIED AT WORK IN HIS OFFICE FRIDAY Last Friday afternoon, the word came of the sudden and entirely unexpected death of the local Banker, Mr. B. I. Lundberg. He had been at work as usual that day, actually feeling as good, if not even better than usual. Friends who had talked to him a few hours or minutes before, said he seemed very cheerful, and was joking with everyone. But suddenly, he suffered a heart attack, caused by a clot, stopping the heart all at once. Death came almost instantly. He had reached the age of just over 63 years. Mr. Lundberg, known familiarly as B. I. or Irvie to his many friends, was born in Dayton on March 29, 1895, the son of Charles and Emma Lundberg. This community has been his lifelong home. Following graduation from high school in 1911, he enrolled in commercial college in Des Moines, and upon completing this course worked briefly in the offices of the Rock Island Railroad in Des Moines. In 1917 he became associated with the local bank, then known as First National and has continued here for 41 years. Later in 1917 he entered the armed services and served in France until the end of World War I. His position at the bank at the time of his death was that of Executive Vice President. On Dec. 11, 1931 Mr. Lundberg was united in marriage with Miss Amy Miller. He affiliated with Emanuel Lutheran Church in 1932 and has remained a faithful member through the years. He had previously been a member of the old Swedish Methodist Church of Dayton, where he had been confirmed in 1910. Mr. Lundberg had many varied interests and responsibilities in our community. He served for many years as treasurer of the local school board; Treasurer of the Scandinavian Mutual Insurance Co.; secretary of the Dayton Municipal Light and Power Association; treasurer of the Dayton High School Alumni Association; and was also active in the American Legion. In his church he had served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 1954, and also as secretary of the Board of Administration. His hobby also entered into his church activities. Widely known for the growing of gladiolus, large bouquets of these beautiful flowers appeared often in church and business places down town. Mr. Lundberg is survived by his wife, Mrs. Amy Lundberg, three sisters, and a host of other relatives and friends. SERVICES MONDAY Funeral services were held in the Lutheran Church here on Monday, with Rev. R. E. Carlson officiating. Carsons were in charge of arrangements. Songs, Have Thine Own Way Lord, and Abide With Me, were offered by Rev. and Mrs. Carlson, accompanied by Miss Marie Thoman. Casketbearers were Earl Hedberg, Byron Johnson, Bill Danielson, Carl Thorne, Verle Eklund and Vern Schwendemann, all good friends and associates. Interment was made in Dayton Cemetery. Irvie is already missed greatly by those at the bank and many persons around this community. His particular place as counselor and expert advisor on matters of finance will be a difficult one to fill. His untimely death was the second time in a week, that a Dayton businessman has been taken from the community. It is hoped that this will be the last for years. The obituary will appear in this paper. OBITUARY BYRON IRVIN LUNDBERG Byron Irvin Lundberg, the son of Charles and Emma Lundberg, was born at Dayton, Iowa, on March 29, 1895. Except for the time spent away from home at school and in the armed services, this community has been his life-long home. He attended Sunday school in the old Swedish Methodist Church, of Dayton, and was confirmed in this communion in 1910. Following graduation from Dayton High school in 1911, Mr. Lundberg took a business course in commercial college in Des Moines. Upon graduation he was employed for a time in the offices of the Rock Island Railroad in Des Moines. In 1917 he became affiliated with the First National Bank, of Dayton, as assistant cashier, and except for a period of service in the armed forces of our country, he has been connected with this bank for the past 41 years. At the time of his passing he had the position of Executive Vice President of this bank which some years ago changed its name to the Iowa State Bank and Trust Company. In addition Mr. Lundberg had many other interests and responsibilities in this community. He served as treasurer of the Scandinavian Mutual Insurance Co., treasurer of the Dayton High School Alumni Association, secretary of the Dayton Light and Power Plant, and many other positions of civic responsibility. Mr. Lundberg and Miss Amy Miller were united in marriage on Dec. 11, 1931. In 1932, Mr. Lundberg affiliated with Emanuel Lutheran Church and has remained a faithful member through the years. Since 1954 he has served as a member of the Board of Trustees, and for most of this time has also served as secretary of the Board of Administration of the church. He was also a member of the American Legion and participated each year in the community Memorial Day observance. Our departed friend seemed to be in his usual good health as he was at work last Friday. He drove home for lunch at noon and later returned to his office. At about 1:30 p.m. he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack and apparently death came instantaneously. At the time of his passing Mr. Lundberg had attained the age of 63 years and 26 days. Mr. Lundberg is survived by his wife, Mrs. Amy Lundberg, three sisters; Mrs. Frances Sandholm, of Dayton, Mildred, Mrs. Otto Luhmann, of Blairsburg, and Leone, Mrs. Knute Rasmussen, of Beaver Creek, Oregon. Many other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents. Peace be to the memory of Byron Irvin Lundberg!
