In his early life he was married to Miss. Mary Sowl, at Argyle, Wis., and to them were born four children of whom two survive him and are well known and highly respected citizens of LeMars,Caleb and Charles Garton , also an adopted son Arthur, of Butte , Montana.-who was unable to be present In 1871 he came to LeMars where he has since resided and on the death of his first wife married Miss. Bertha Klonhammer in 1894. To them five children were born and all mourn the loss of a kind father whom they all dearly loved . Mr. Garton was a pioneer blacksmith of this city and chief of the fire department for some years. In his last moments he was back with his old company fighting fire. Of late years he has been the kindly caretaker of the city cemetery and was always careful that no pauper was laid away without a prayer from him. He was never identified with any church as a member .He was a kind hearted man and loved his family. He suffered from kidney trouble for some years past but the end came suddenly of uremic poison on Wednesday morning at 6 o'clock. His only living sister, Mrs. Joseph Morton, and her husband of Laurens, Iowa, and his brothers John, Arthur and George from Marathon ,Wisconsin (sic, should be; Iowa), were all present during his last hours. One brother in Colorado was unable to come. His familiar figure will be missed from the streets of this city and his many friends will find only kind words to speak of him.
