Read More	Pocahontas County Sun May 22, 1913 (Page 8) John Garton Marathon Republic—John Garton was born in Wisconsin, April 4, 1843, and died at his home near Marathon, April 30, 1913, aged 70 years and 16 days. He was married in1860, to Emily Jane Lattin. In 1871 with his wife and children re removed to Iowa, and the next pear homesteaded on the place that has since been their home. Many years ago he was baptized and joined the Church of God, later became a minister of the church and serving as pastor of the local church. He was firm in his belief to the last. For several years he had been a sufferer of diabetes, and gangrene setting in, it terminated in his death. He suffered much for several weeks, but Monday he seemed to be resting easier and we knew the end was near. Yet when it came, we realized that - "A precious one from us was gone; A voice we loved was stilled, A place was vacant in our home That never can be filled." His mind was clear to the very last, and he talked of his hope and business affairs until he grew so weak he could not speak to us. And on Wednesday morning, April 30th, he fell peacefully to sleep in Jesus. He is survived by his aged wife, one son Henry, and one daughter, Mrs. Anna Boyanovsky of this place, three brothers, Edwin of Colorado, Arthur and George of Marathon, and one sister Mrs. Elizabeth Morton of Laurens. Three sons and a daughter have preceded him. The funeral services were held at the home Friday May 2nd, at 1:00 p.m. Here friends and relatives gathered to look for the last time on the one whom they had known and respected through all the years. Eldred marsh of Marshalltown spoke words of comfort to those that were left. We laid him to rest in the Marathon cemetery. Transcribed by: Kim Haukoos
