He was among the hardy pioneers, who endured and was rewarded with earthly possessions for such endurance. He merited and retained the full respect and honor of his fellow man, because of his sincere and unfaltering integrity. His removal from this life will detract from the number, who without faltering held the ideals of true manhood. Calab James Joyce was born on March 9, 1854 in Renhold Bedfordshire, England. Born of sturdy English parents, Mr. Joyce was the ninth of a family of ten children. In 1879 he was married to Annie Elizabeth Peacock. Mr. Joyce came to Atlantic, Ia. with his family in the spring of 1890. Two years later, he moved to the farm 4 and one half miles northeast of Winnetoon, where he made his home until the day of his death. Death was due to cancer, which at times was very painful, claiming its victim on the night of May 24, 1929 at 11:30. He was a very patient sufferer. Thus, Mr. Joyce departed this life at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 15 days, leaving to mourn his loss, one sister, Mrs. Will Hayse of West Leake, England; his four children, Cecil G. Joyce of Fairfax, S.D.; Ethel E., J. Sidney and Thomas A. Joyce of Winnetoon, besides numerous relatives and many friends. Reared in a Godly home, Mr. Joyce embraced those Christian principles, which made him every inch a man, quiet and unassuming in manner, with a keen sense of honor and a passion for the right. Mr. Joyce unselfishly spent himself for the welfare of his family and the community in which he lived. Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church at Creighton on Monday, May 27, 1929 at 2 p.m. Rev. Good of winnetoon officiated. Sam Young, George Saunders, R.C. Clare, Fred Bessert, A.C. Nielsen and Matt Jensen acted as pallbearers. Mrs. William Saunders, Mrs. P. Glimsdal, Mrs. J. Nelson, Mrs. M. Jensen and Mrs. R.N. Good had charge of the flowers.
