Description	:	Mr. Calvin Messer a well known resident of this city passed away very suddenly Thursday afternoon at his home in the city. Mr. Messer had gone out into the garden to set out some cabbage plants when he was seized with what is thought to have been heart failure and passed away without a moment's warning. He was found a few minutes later by his wife. Mr. Messer was a well known and highly respected man and had many friends who will regret to learn of his passing. Pleasant News-- 21 May 1920} ********************* CALVIN MESSER Calvin Messer, son of John and Rhoda Miller Messer was born Aug. 26, 1855 and died May 20, 1920, age 64 years, eight months, twenty days. He was married to Elizabeth E. Smith, Dec. 6, 1877 and to this union were born ten children, nine of whom survive as follows: Harvey Lester of Blanchard, Mich., Arthur of Fairfield; Elva Howe of Washington; Lyzelle of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Maud Payne of Washington; Mrs. Alice Rich of Brighton; Mrs. Stella Loader of Wayland; Mrs. Grace Moran of Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Chleo Lyon of Mt. Pleasant; Anna Elnora Messer who died at the age of six and thirty-six grandchildren all living except one, Lucille Loader, who died at the age of two years. He was one of a large family of 17 children, six of whom survive; Alvin, Lincoln, Simon, all of Rome; Mrs. Jane Allender of Lockridge; Mrs. Rebecca Olinger, Mrs. Mary Scarff of Rome. He joined the United Brethren church at Mt. Ayer several years ago. He was a devoted husband and a kind loving father and was loved and respected by all who knew him. ------------- Funeral of Calvin Messer The funeral of the late Calvin Messer was held from his home, 1101 Mulberry street, on Sunday morning at ten o'clock. Pastor Frank Weston of the First Baptist Church was in charge. Miss Mary Haines, Mrs. F. B. Coleman, Mr. Sebastian Skipton and Frank Weston sang the hymns. A large number gathered. Many beautiful flowers covered the casket. A later and more extended service was held in Green Mound Bethel at one o'clock. The house was crowded to the doors. The local choir sang. Pastor Weston preached from I Cor. 15:26. The pall bearers, all sons-in-law, were Harry Payne, Peter Rich, Peter Lyons and Clark Loder. Interment was in Green Mound Cemetery. {Mt.
