Obituary: Calvin Likens Vest was born in Montgomery Co., Va. Sept. 10, 1859 and departed this life April 5, 1929, age 78 years, 6 months and 25 days. He was married to Katherine Stinson in 1872. To this union were born thirteen children, nine of which survive. For 59 years, he has been a faithful member of the Methodist Curch, having joined Mt. Zion Church during a meeting held by preacher Lockhart in 1870. He was a good husband and father. No man could have been more devoted to his family. His affection and devotion to his to his wife and children and grandchildren is known and admired by all who knew him. His devotion to his friends is known and admired by all. Only the good can be really great, and it seems that he possessed every quality that goes to make up a good man. It might be truly said of him, he hath fought a good fight, he hath kept the faith, and finished his course and gone on to get that beautiful crown that is laid up for all that believes and accepts Jesus Christ as our Savior. Yes, Bro. Vest was never too busy to greet you in the home or by the wayside, and spend a while in a good old fashion talk. To his children he was so friendly and kind that the children always loved to see Uncle Calvin, but he has gone to his reward. But, dear friends and loved ones, you know where to find him, just inside of that beautiful gate along that street of gold to the city of our God, waiting and watching for his loved ones left behind. The services were conducted by the Rev. I. N. Munsey of Staffordsville work and Rev. I. L. Parks of the Mechanicsburg work. Bro. Munsey made a good talk at the house and Bro. Parks concluded the service at the cemetery. The singing that was so beautiful was conducted by Mr. Daily Stafford and others from Trigg. At 1 o'clock the remains of Bro. Vest were laid to rest in the old Stinson Cemetery. One of the largest crowds that has ever attended a country burial looked on with bowed heads while the clods fell gently in the grave and (it was) banked with flowers. The crowd turned away and dropped a tear and said in their hearts: "We hope to meet again in the land where we'll never grow old." Author: M. L. Thompson, White Gate, Va.
