Sick at home 9/16/1862; present and listed as 1st Lieut on Nov & Dec 1862 Roll. Listed as Capt Jan & Feb 1863 Roll. Wounded 5/2/1863 Chancellorsville, VA.; present on July & Aug 1863 Roll. Court martialed 9/17/1863 for having been AWOL; acquitted. Hospitalized 11/8/1863 with hepatitis, forcing him to resign 2/23/1864. Postwar he returned to Fredericksburg and practiced law. He was also a Mason. The 55th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by the addition of four companies to W.N. Ward's "Essex and Middlesex" Battalion of Virginia Volunteers. In February, 1865, the 47th and 55th Regiments were consolidated.
