Resignation accepted on 8/30/1864; his Colonel stated that "Lt. Goolrick is not a very efficient officer." Postwar, he was living in Fredericksburg; member of Good Templars. "On Tuesday morning last, at 2 clock, the spirit of him whose name heads this notice, took its departure from its earthly tenement, leaving a household in mourning for a devoted son and brother and the community shocked by the suddenness of the taking off of a well-known and highly respected citizen. Robert Emmett Goolrick was the third son of the late Peter Goolrick, and was born in the year 1842. His life was without event until the breaking out of the war, when as a youth of eighteen he responded to the call of his country, and enlisted as a private in the 55th Regt. Va. Vol. Of a frail and delicate form and a naturally retiring disposition, it was not hoped or expected by his friends that his service would be of long duration or signalized by any special act of merit. But there was a glint in the eye of the young soldier and a warming of the pulse which indicated that when duty called he would be found, and when the crucial test was applied, he proved to be of pure metal, and his devotion to duty, coolness in time of danger and an unflinching brave became marked characteristics of the modest soldier, which very soon appreciated and won for him merited promotion. Lieut. Goolrick became at once a valued and trusted officer, and in the numerous battles in which he was engaged, he was ever found in the fore rank. He commanded his company with conspicuous ability in several important engagements and at the battle of Gettysburg received wounds from which he suffered to the day of his death. As a citizen Mr. Goolrick was quiet and unobtrusive; his delicate sensibility and modesty causing him to shrink from intercourse with his fellow citizens generally. Yet to those who knew him well, he was courteous, kind, affable and often comnunicative, at times surprising his chosen friends with his store of general information. For several years Mr. Goolriick has been in very delicate health, but apprehensions of a serious termination were indulged in by himself or family. His death, therefore, was unexpected, and was a great shock to his widowed mother to whom he was the mainstay in her declining years. His funeral took place on Thursday afternoon from St. George's Episcopal Church, and was attended by numerous friends and relatives." Fredericksburg Star, Sept. 14, 1886. The 55th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by the addition of four companies to W.N. Ward's "Essex and Middlesex" Battalion of Virginia Volunteers.
