Aged Citizen of Monroe Passes Away - One of the First Conductors on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad and a Good Citizen. Correspondence of The Observer. Monroe, Aug. 27. -- Captain James Wesley Whitfield died here yesterday at the age of 82 years, after an illness of several months. Men of his type are seldom found. He was in every sense of the word a high-toned Christian gentleman and many considered him the best man in Monroe. He was born in Halifax county, January 1, 1822. He was one of the first conductors on the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad. He was married in 1851 to Miss Virginia Caldwell Tally and moved to Wilmington where he kept books for Ellis & Mitchell. In 1863 he moved his family to Lumberton and was station agent at Maxton, then known as Shoe Heel, until 1874, when he came to Monroe to take charge of the agency here. He was agent here until 1890, when he gave up railroad life and stayed with his sons, "Whitfield Bros.," who were conducting a general merchandise store here. He was always actively engaged in Church work and his place in the Sunday school will be hard to fill. He leaves a wife, a brother, Mr. W. T. Whitfield, and five children, viz: Messrs. ? Whitfield, of Monroe; Geo. M. Whitfield, of Lumberton; Mesdames E. T. W?, of Wilmington; J. M. Morrow, of Albemarle, and Miss Lizzie Whitfield, of Monroe. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a true friend. Surely a good man has gone to his reward. Funeral services will be held at the M. E. church to-morrow at 11 o'clock by Dr. J. C. Rowe.
