Read More	∼OBITUARY OF CAPT. JOHN SCHILLING Capt. John SCHILLING died of a complication of ailments at his home just south of this city, at 5 o'clock Saturday morning, November 25, 1911, aged 74 years, 10 months and 25 days. He is survived by second wife and four sons by his first wife; Albert of Leavenworth; Jacob, the county treasurer; Martin, near Baker; William, on the home place; and two daughters, Mrs. Anna CRANDALL, near the home place and Mrs. Ella SIMANSTON of Globe, Arizona; a brother Daniel, of Kalamazoo and a sister Mrs. Conrad MEISENHEIMER of this city. Captain SCHILLING fell in the yard from a stroke of paralysis November 15, 1909. Thirteen years before that a cancer appeared upon his lip. It had been cut out and healed by treatment, but since the stroke of paralysis it broke out anew and caused him great suffering as it slowly drained his life away. The immediate cause of death is thought to have been a combination of cancer, paralysis and possibly pneumonia. Captain SCHILLING was born January 01, 1837 in Bavaria, Germany, near Bingen on the Rhine. He came to this country with his parents and settled near New York City in 1849. He then removed to Michigan, near Kalamazoo in 1852, and came to Kansas March 6, 1857. He took the claim for homestead where he died. He resided a short time in Andrew county and came here with the Meisenheimers. He was married to Miss Susan MEISENHEIMER, daughter of Martin MEISENHEIMER, a soldier under Napoleon Bonaparte, bayoneted at the battle of Waterloo. George E. Clayton, probate judge, performed the wedding at the home of John MAGLOTT, November 12, 1857. In July 1862 Capt. SCHILLING helped organize the Jim Lane Brigade, was made captain of Company D and served to the close of the war. He was always in active life. In 1876 he was appointed county commissioner to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Capt. WALTERS; was a member of the legislature in 1882; a state senator in 1888; a delegate to the National Republican convention in 1896, when McKinley was nominated; served on school board 21 years. He was an enthusiastic Mason, a member of Lodge 35, charter member with Mt. Horeb Chapter 46, charter member, past eminent commander of Commandery 13 Knight Templars, member of K. of P. Lodge and G.A.R. Post 130. At the close of the war Capt. SCHILLING and Coon MEISENHEIMER established the grocery business in Hiawatha, which in 1870 was changed to J. Schilling & Co., later to J. Schilling & Bro., and in 1882 he disposed of his interest and organized the Hiawatha Union Loan and Trust Co., with Col ATEN, from which he retired in 1892. Captain SCHILLING was an aggressive Republican from the organization of the party, never giving or asking quarter. He attended all conventions and was a power in molding sentiment and party progress. In the convention of 1881, he made an address, which was really adopted as the platform of the party. His acquaintance among politicians was state and nationwide, and he was a great force in the legislature and senate during the decade of the 80's. He was one of the early pioneers of Brown county and in all its history and progress, has not only taken an active part, but has been a prominent leader. For 54 years he has been a citizen of the county, a resident of Hiawatha and suburbs, a good and faithful citizen, a man of enterprise and progress, a pusher for public improvement and best of all in the varied positions of his life an honest, outspoken, square dealing man. In some respects he was Brown county's greatest citizen, ranking with Gov. MORRILL and Mr. WILDER. He was ever a fighter for all he stood for. Those with him knew that he would never fail them. And yet he carried differences no farther when the issue at point was settled. When he lost or won at politics he got ready for another campaign. As a merchant and citizen, many's the good turn he did for his fellow man and the town. As stated he had to do with nearly every public enterprise. Of late years his illness kept him from taking prominent part, but he was certain to send word if he was for the project. Capt. SCHILLING did more than any other member to raise the new Presbyterian church building. He was a good Mason--always foremost in the lodge councils. Nothing he cared for was ever allowed to fail. His energy swept it through. Summing up the record of his long and busy life we can write that he gave much to his community--few home men did as much or accomplished more. No one of his time had more followers. Farewell brave man. Your unfaltering courage will ever be remembered! The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at the home at 2:30 conducted by Rev. L. L. Hassenpflug. Burial will be made in the Hiawatha Cemetery. (Published in The Hiawatha Daily World (KS), November 25, 1911.)∼Year 1883 June 11, Jacob G. SCHILLING, son of Capt. John SCHILLING, left for West Point, the first one ever to go from this county to this famous military academy. Later, January 31, 1884, Percy Pepoon, of Falls City, Nebraska, in writing to The World in regard to the academy, said: Jake SCHILLING, of Hiawatha, passed; that he was a noble fellow and we are sworn brothers.
