Read More	~ADAM SCHILLING Editor World: You ask me to write about the remarkable man, Adam SCHILLING, whose funeral today has been attended by so large a number of our citizens. Few men in the county, very few, were so generally respected; probably no other man was held in higher esteem. He was born in Germany in 1833 [sic], and came to this county when a child. The family first lived in Columbia County, New York, on the Hudson, near Albany, and moved thence to Michigan. His brother John was the first of the family to come to Kansas, to Leavenworth, in 1855. Later he came to Brown County and took up the claim near this town where he still resides and where he has made a beautiful home. After his service in the Union Army, Captain John SCHILLING established a store in this city. His brother Adam moved here in 1870, became the Captain's partner in the store and bought the quarter section of land adjoining town on the north on which he has resided. In 1882, Mr. SCHILLING, from a portion of this land, made an annex to the town, SCHILLING's Addition, which will always keep his name on the map. Having long lived on SCHILLING Avenue, in SCHILLING's Addition and having known most of the people who bought lots here, I can testify that all of the dealings of the purchasers with Adam SCHILLING received from him a square deal. I have never heard any charge made against him by those purchasers. Everything that he said he would do he did, and often much more, and all of these people became his strong and warm friends. That was Adam SCHILLING's way of doing business. Some years ago Captain John SCHILLING retired from the business partnership. Since that time Adam with his sons has continued to be one of our prominent merchants. Thus he has become personally well known to a very large number of our people, to men, women, and children. How has he stood the test? He was a man utterly free from show, pretense or humbug of any kind. Plain in speech; no flattery, no falsehood about him. He liked men; and he was full of kindness, of sociability. He liked to talk, to joke and to laugh in his hearty, whole-souled manner. When men were in need, when they required help, he helped them and said nothing about it. It gave him pleasure to quietly assist those who were destitute; that was Adam SCHILLING; a man who loved his fellowmen. He made no talk about religion, and took no active part in politics. He simply went about doing good. And such men are regarded while they live here and when they go to the higher life beyond. --D. W.
