Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 2 Oct 1879 p3: "We are sorry to know that our old townsman, Mr. Leonard Robinson of Foxcroft, is in such a precarious state of health. He attends to business, however, but has appetite for nothing, and his once stalwart frame has been reduced to a mere skeleton." Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 16 Oct 1879 p3: "DEATH OF CAPT. LEONARD ROBINSON---Capt. Leonard Robinson, one of the older residents of Foxcroft, died yesterday afternoon, after a painful illness, aged 66 years. His death to many will be a surprise, but we understand that the disease which caused his death has been lurking about him for several months, perhaps years, and he has probably suffered far more than his most intimate friends were aware. Deceased took his bed less than a week ago, previous to which he was daily seen upon our streets. The late West Robinson and Ellis, brothers of Leonard, both died of a disease similar to that which caused the latter's death---probably a cancer or some other disease of the stomach it is thought. Mr. Robinson has held offices of trust in years gone by in Foxcroft, and was at the time of his death one of our County Commissioners, his term of office expiring next January. Funeral services will be held at his late residence at half past one o'clock Friday." Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 30 Oct 1879 p2: "OBITUARY---Capt. Leonard Robinson, one of the old landmarks in society here, died at his home in Foxcroft, on the 15th inst. at the age of sixty-six years. He was born in Turner [discrepancy], Maine. His parents removed to Sangerville, then a wilderness, when he was in his infancy. When he was eleven years of age his father Ellis Robinson moved to Foxcroft and settled upon the farm just out of the village, on which Mr. Samuel C. Greeley now resides. Here, Ellis Robinson, the father, made a home for his family, and died in 1832, when Leonard was nineteen years old. Young as he was, at his father's death the care of the family devolved upon him. He took charge of, and successfully managed the farm. He then, and ever afterward gave his widowed mother a comfortable and pleasant home, even up to the time of her death, a few years since, at extreme old age; brought up and educated the minor children of his father's family; and paid each of the heirs, the proper proportion of his father's little estate. Of that family of seven children but one remains, Mrs. Eliza Parsons, of Foxcroft, widow of the late honored Dea. William Parsons. In 1838 Leonard married Miss Mary Purington of Bloomfield, Maine, who survives him. Then entering the battle of life, by united energy, industry and economy, they have been successful. They had but two children, the younger son dying early, the older of whom Dr. H. A. Robinson, now residing in Foxcroft. In 1858, Capt. Robinson sold out his large farm above referred to and bought, moved upon, and greatly improved the beautiful homestead farm and residence in the village, on which he resided at the time of his decease. He died of chronic inflammation of the stomach. Three times in 1878 he was completely prostrated, and apparently lifeless from heart disease, induced by over-exertion and excitement. From the later and finally fatal disease he suffered about two months. His funeral was largely attended especially by the older portion of the community, among whom were prominent citizens from different sections of the county. In politics he was always on the side of humanity. He was instinctively opposed to the barbarism of slavery. Long before the national republican party had an existence, he proclaimed the free soil doctrine, which was then extremely unpopular. But Leonard with all the ardor of his nature fearlessly battled the old pro-slavery hard-shells of both parties. When the Republican party was organized, he enlisted therein for life. In every campaign since by his influence both in peace and in war he has done stalwart service under the ample folds of the banner of that great national party which within the last twenty years has rewritten the history of the world on the tablets of eternal justice. For about a dozen years he was the efficient highway surveyor of the village district, and many of the important improvements, wrought under his supervision, will long outlive the present generation. Three times he was elected County Commissioner of this county, and was once appointed to that office by a Democratic governor at the solicitations of the citizens of both parties. It is safe to say that many important highways have been opened, altered and amended much to the advantage of the county, largely through his influence. His policy in these respects was a far sighted one. On several occasions, as County Commissioner, he labored strenuously and successfully to save large sums to the county, which but for him might have been lost. Capt. Robinson would never accept any office though tendered, which he did not feel assured he could efficiently fill. He declined positions offered him, through distrust of his own qualifications. Where good judgment and knowledge of men and things were required he had few superiors. Whatever he did was done with tact, fidelity and ability. Promptness, neatness and thoroughness characterized his works. In the olden time he was greatly interested in State military affairs---held a Captaincy and the preceding subordinate offices in a company of cavalry. In the great religious revival twenty-two years ago, he was a convert and then joined the Baptist church of which his wife and mother had long been members, and of which he has always been a liberal supporter. He was of lively temperament and of kind and sympathetic disposition---just and honorable in his dealings. No spirit of vindictiveness every swerved him from duty in relation to those by whom he might have been assailed. Capt. Robinson was a substantial citizen whose loss will be felt in the community in which he lived."
