Orphaned at the age of five he commenced seafaring at age 8 years aboard a fishing vessel, later commanding coasting vessels. Married Mercy Bursley Parker June 19,1845. In 1854 he entered the service of Merchants' and Miners' Transportation Co, and was made master of the steamer William Jenkins.When the Civil War broke out he was in command of the Ben Deford. |
