He was born in Hanover, Germany, in December, 1863, and is a son of Carl and Carolina (Lahmaan) Hoppenworth, natives of the same province, where the father engaged in farming for a number of years. He came to America in 1869 and located in Bremer county, buying land in Douglas township. He became one of the most successful and prominent farmers of that locality and made valuable contributions to its development and growth. In his family were seven children, of whom the subject of this review is the fifth. Carl Hoppenworth acquired his education in the district schools of Bremer county and afterward studied in Wartburg College, Waverly. He remained upon the homestead until 1885 and engaged for one year thereafter in teaching. When he again returned to the farm he remained there until January 1, 1902, when he was elected county treasurer. At the close of his first term he was reelected and owing to a change in the laws served five years. When he went out of office he was made secretary and treasurer of the Waverly Brewing Company and he has filled these offices and also served as local manager since that time. The company owns an excellent plant, the main building being ninety-four by one hundred feet in dimensions and four stories high. There is also a bottling works, thirty by seventy by thirty feet, and the equipment and accessories are all modern, up-to-date and practical. The brewery has a capacity of thirty thousand barrels and also does a large business in bottled beer, supplying a growing local patronage. Much of the credit for the success of the enterprise is due to the well directed efforts of Carl Hoppenworth, who understands the brewing business in principle and detail and is, moreover, a man of sound judgment and far-reaching sagacity. He is aided in the management of the business by his brother August, who was born October 7, 1849. After beginning his active career he engaged in farming until 1906 and then moved to Waverly. For the past three years he has been connected with the brewery and given much valuable assistance to his brother. He married Miss Louisa Luhring, a native of Germany and a daughter of Diedrich Luhring, who located in Randolph county, Illinois, and afterward removed to Bremer county. Mr. and Mrs. August Hoppenworth have three children: Emma, now Mrs. L.E. Rodemeier, of Douglas township; Ernest, engaged in farming in the same locality; and August C., on the old homestead. On the 17th of July, 1885, Carl Hoppenworth married Miss Alvina Krumwiede, a native of Cook county, Illinois and a daughter of Frederick Krumwiede, formerly in the implement business in Waverly. Mr. and Mrs. Hoppenworth have five children. The eldest, Alfred C., formerly a stenographer and bookkeeper, is now engaged in the cultivation of citrus fruits in Florida. Lucinda married John Maas, of Waverly. The others are Ewald, Rose and Laura, all at home. Mr. Hoppenworth is a member of the Lutheran church and is a man of exemplary character, highly respected wherever he is known.
