His boyhood years were spent in his native land with his parents, brothers and sisters and he came to America at the age of 19 years, coming directly to Stratford, which was his home until his death. Read More	Stratford Courier February 22, 1940 Obituary Carl Bergman Carl Edward Bergman, son of Carl and Mary Bergman, was born in Westergotland [Västra Götaland], Sweden, on Dec. 15, 1871, and died here Feb. 20, 1940, in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Johnson, at the age of 68 years, 2 months, 5 days. His boyhood years were spent in his native land with his parents, brothers and sisters and he came to America at the age of 19 years, coming directly to Stratford, which was his home until his death. On March 30, 1896, he was united in marriage to Christine Johnson and six children were born to them. Two children, Edward and Elsie, died, in infancy. The surviving children are: one son, Everett, and three daughters, Mrs. Tilghman Ferlen, Mrs. Julius Johnson and Mrs. Roy Carlson, all of Stratford. His wife died in May 1939, and he was also preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary. One sister, Mrs. Nels L. Johnson, and three brothers, John, Henry and Ben Bergman, all of this vicinity, also survive. He is also mourned by 11 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and a large host of true friends. He was converted and baptized in 1921 and received into members of Stratford Baptist church the same year. He lived a faithful and earnest Christian life, serving in many positions in the church, holding for various periods of time the offices of church treasurer, trustee, deacon and vice chairman. He was also very active in the welfare of Stratford, serving for many years on the town council. Deceased was ever a kind and loving father, placing the care and welfare of his family first in his heart. About four years ago, he became afflicted with a nerve ailment which steadily grew worse until he was almost helpless, becoming bedfast three weeks before his death. However, he was always patient and considerate, hoping that he would never become a burden to his loved ones. Not dead, but gone within the veil Just a step or two. Our mortal eyes are holden; We cannot get their view Of life Immortal; Life Eternal Life, real life at last. For them the storm of stress and strife And even death is past. For us a little while the pain For we step through the veil To live in that glad Life And meet again. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 23, in the Julius Johnson home at 1:30 o'clock and in the Baptist church at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Francis B. Sorley officiating. He used Acts 20:31-32 as his text and spoke briefly on 'The Comforts of a Christian's Farewell.” A ladies quartet, composed of Mesdames Oscar Borg, R. U. Freese, Francis Sorley and Miss Vernice Johnson, sang "The Eastern Gate” and "Good Night and Good Morning.” Mrs. Kennedy playing the accompaniments. The Rev. Mr. Sorley sang "Shadows," with Mrs. Sorley at the piano. Interment was on the Bergman lot in Oakwood cemetery. Six nephews of deceased were pallbearers: Carl Wahman, and Lloyd John son, Roy, Alvie and Glenn Bergman.
