Slatt Dies of Mine Mishap Injuries Carl E. Slatt 49, the eldest of three brothers who were in the clothing business in Long Beach many years, and who was noted during his residence in this city for his ability as a public speaker and for his active part in the city's club, fraternal and civic life, died yesterday morning in Denver of injuries sustained in a gold mine accident near that city. Mr Slatt had gone to aid in handling the property affairs of a sister at Denver three and one-half years ago and had become owner of a gold mine near the Colorado city. It was while he was in a shaft that a cave-in occurred, sending a 1000-pound rock down upon him, crushing him badly. The accident occurred two weeks ago yesterday Critical internal injuries weakened him to such a extent that when complications of pneumonia set in he failed to rally. Mr Slatt was a native of Edgar, Neb. He came to Long Beach after his two brothers, Emil F. Slatt of 3416 East Second Street, and Harry Slatt, now of Lincoln, Neb., had established a clothing business here. He remained ten years, working as a partner with his brothers. The decedent was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was a charter member of the Pacific Coast Club and later became Secretary of that organization. He also belongs to the local Elks Lodge No 888 and to the Masons. He cultivated a wide friendship throughout his varied activities. He was married in 1922 in Nebraska and before he came to Long Beach had been a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of that State. Besides the two brothers, Mr Slatt is survived by the widow, Mrs Rebecca Slatt; a daughter, Marie 11 years of age; a son, Carl Jr., 10 and another daughter, Elinor, who is three and one-half years of age. All resided at Denver. Mrs H. B. Stapleton of Hickman, Neb.; Mrs B. R. Ordway of Los Angeles, Mrs F. D. McDaniel of San Pedro and Mrs Ben A. Dooley of Long Beach are sisters who survive. =============================================== The Edgar Sun (Edgar, NE) Aug 24, 1934, Pg 1 Carl E Slatt Carl Edward Slatt was born December 12, 1884, in Fillmore county (sic), Nebraska and died August 17, 1934 in Denver, Colorado. He was reared in the community in the Swedish Lutheran faith but in early manhood joined the Presbyterian church. He was educated in the Davenport high school, the Wahoo preparatory school, the Bethany College, Lindsburg, Kansas, and the University of Nebraska. He was associated with his brothers in Long Beach, Calif., for ten years and the last three years were spent in Denver looking after mining interests. He was a member of Long Beach Masonic lodge, Elks and Arthur Peterson Unit of the American Legion. He is survived by his widow, Rebecca G. Slatt, and three children, Marie, Carl E. Jr and Eleanor; five sisters, Mrs Edna Ordway, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs Inez Stapleton, Hickman, Nebr.; Mrs Alice Hime and Mrs Dorothy McDaniels, San Pedro, Calif., and Mrs Viola Dooley, Long Beach, Calif., and two brothers Emil F. Slatt, Long Beach, Calif., and Harry B. Slatt, Lincoln, Neb. and a host of relatives and friends. The body was brought to Edgar Monday. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev T. S. Hughes in charge. The Presbyterian male quartette sang. Interment was made in the Edgar cemetery.
