Description	:	Last rites for Carl F. (BuB Kern, 74, Stanwood, were held at First United Methodist Church, Tipton, Dec 7, with the Rev. Jerrold Swinton officiating. Burial was in Shawver cenetery. Pallbearers were Gerald, wallace and Terrance Straub and Robert, Craig and Bruce Kern. Mr. and Mrs. John Hipple and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Albaugh were in charge of flowers. Mrs. Arnold Swan was organist and Mrs. Donald Hipple was vocalist. Mr. Kern was instantly killed in a hunting accident the afternoon of Dec. 3. An experienced hunter, he had gone to the vicinity of the Mason cemetery in Linn township, north of Cedar Bluff, at approximately the same time that snow began to cover the ground. About 4 p.m. a farmer in the area saw his truck still parked and followed Kern's tracks in a wide circle. Kern was approaching the cemetery from the west, apparently on his way back to his truck when, on crossing a fence, his 16 gauge shotgun discharged. The son of Henry W. and Minerva Achey Kern, he was born near Oasis May 5, 1907 and attended the rural schools of the area. He was married to Margaret A. Johnson at Cedar Rapids, March 1, 1934. He farmed in the Red Oak area from 1935 to 1960 and was active as a trucker after retiring to Stanwood in 1960. A veteran hunter, he was particularly familiar with the area around the Mason cenetery and helped to keep up the area. A good story teller, he shared his hunting and other experiences with shut-ins. He is survuved by a sister, mrs. Agnes (Dolly) Straub, Henning, Minn; 3 brothers, John, Lodi, Calif.; Bill, Hewitt, Minn. and Glen (Coon) Mechanicsville, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother.
