Mr. Kern had undergone a major operation at Cedar Rapids in July of last year and another operation again this spring, and seemed to be regaining his health. He became critically ill however Wednesday evening of last week and was rushed to the hospital at Perham, Minnesota, from his cottage at Ottertail Lake. His children were summoned but before Carl, Glen and Clarence of this community arrived Saturday he had lapsed into unconsciousness. Henry William Kern was the second of a family of eight children born to Jacob and Susan Kern at Norway, Iowa, July 16, 1876. He died at St. John's hospital, Perham, Minnesota, on September 14th at the age of 64 years one month and 29 days. A sister passed away May 9, 1932. The family moved to Laurens, Iowa, but later Henry came to Cedar county where he has made his home since that time. He was married to Miss Minerva Achey on May 16, 1900. There were six children. Mrs. Kern passed away on December 9, 1918. The family continued on the farm until 1929, when they moved to Tipton where Henry has made his home since that time. He was married to Mrs. Minnie Wentzel, Mechanicsville, on July 22, 1940. They lived in a cottage at Ottertail , Minnesota until his death. He was an active member of the Manitou Lodge, I. O. O. F. Number 8 of Tipton, having joined on April 6, 1929. He was a Past Noble Grand and also served as trustee of the lodge for three years. Besides his wife he leaves six children, John of Sacremento, California, William and Agnes (Mrs. Warren Straub) of Hewitt, Minnesota, Carl, Glen and Clarence of Mechanicsville, Iowa. There are six brothers and one-half sister, Leonard of Egan, S. Dakota, Martin, Frank, Silas and James of Hewitt, Minnesota, Carl of Fenton, Iowa, and Mrs. Edwin Gustafson of Sherburn, Minnesota. Beside there are five grandchildren, Jean and Muriel Kern and Gerald, Iola and Wallace Straub of Hewitt, Minnesota.
