Description	:	"Fred" Tesch was born January 28, 1840 in Pomerania, Germany (now Gotsyn, Poland), son of Carl T Tesch and Charlotte Frederika Schmeckel. On May 2, 1857, the family departed from Hamburg, Germany on the ship Gutenburg, arriving at Quebec City about 8 weeks later. They travelled by rail to Milwaukee, and the final stage of the journey was made by wagon to Watertown, Wisconsin. On May 2, 1857, the family departed from Hamburg, Germany on the ship Gutenburg, arriving at Quebec City about 8 weeks later. They travelled by rail to Milwaukee, and the final stage of the journey was made by wagon to Watertown, Wisconsin. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Fred and two of his brothers set out to enlist in the 13th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers. Fred and his brother, John, were accepted as privates in Company A of the Regiment September 18, 1861, but William, who was only 14 years old, was placed in the quartermaster's department until he was 16 and allowed to join his brothers. Fred was mustered out with the regiment November 14, 1865. Upon his return from the service, Fred married Johanna Louise Sophia Ernstine Henrietta Vorpahl on March 1, 1867 (or February 24, 1867, according to church records) in Watertown, Wisconsin. They moved to Rock township, Mitchell County, Iowa in 1869 with two children, Henry and August. Another son, Herman, was born in Mitchell county and died at the age of three. Another child was also born in Iowa and died as an infant. After the death of his wife in 1920, Fred continued to live on the old homestead with his son, Henry, and his family. Fred enjoyed excellent health until the last year of his life. Fred died August 29, 1931. Mrs. Tesch and three children preceded him in death. He is buried at St. John's Lutheran cemetery. Fred was the last of the founders of the St. John's congregation. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his great interest in current topics, his whole hearted generosity, and his cheerful disposition.
