Citizens of Orchard and community received a terrible shock Tuesday about one o'clock when they were informed that Carl Stelling, one of Orchard's very prominent citizens, had dropped dead in a restaurant in Neligh eating his dinner. Mr. Stelling, who had been working for the government a major portion of the time for the past two or three years with work connected with the AAA and later with the soil conservation program, had been making several trips to Neligh weekly and was in Neligh Tuesday looking after some of that work and had stepped over to a restaurant for lunch when he was stricken. With Mr. Stelling's death this community suffers the loss of one who had a wide circle of friends. He was ever ready to assist his fellow men and there were many who turned to him for sound-logic advice. He was a successful farmer and business man. At the time of his death he was president of the board of directors of the local creamery and at various times had taken an active part in different public enterprises. In the passing of this worthy gentleman the community suffers a great loss and he leaves vacant one of those places that are very difficult to fill. And the great loss suffered by his good family cannot be expressed sufficiently in words. Carl Johann Stelling was born at Marne Ditmaschen, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, 7 April 1872. His parents were Christof and Margaret Stelling nee Vohs. In the year 1884 the family moved to the United States and settled in Grand Island, Nebraska. In 1886 they homesteaded at Bassett, Nebraska and from there they moved to Hooper, Nebraska in 1894. The following year he was confirmed and so became a member of the Ev. Lutheran church of that place. He was united in marriage with Emma M. Mosel on 18 February 1897 in Sheridan Township, Washington County, Nebraska. They made their home at Hooper, Nebraska and while there the children Emil, Louise, Hermine and Henry were born to them. In 1903 they with their family moved to Hayward, Wisconsin, where they lived until the spring of 1912. While there Christoph, Erhart, Christine and Carl were born. That year they then came to Orchard, Nebraska, which has been the home of the father ever since. While at Orchard two more children graced their union, Elmer and Lorine. The wife and mother passed away on 4 April 1916 and on the 8th of August 1916 the youngest son Elmer died. The deceased was ever a faithful member of the Lutheran church and for 23 years he served the local Lutheran church as elder. He preserved a Christian home and gave all the children the advantage of a Christian education. Mr. Stelling's word was a good as gold and was never questioned among his associates. He was very conservative in his conversation and though before speaking and was always very considerate of other people's feelings. To mourn the passing of a beloved father are Emil, Louise, Hermine, Henry and Chris of Orchard, Nebraska, Erhardt of Wiota, Iowa, Christine of Amarillo, Texas, Carl of Columbus, Nebraska, and Lorine of Atlantic, Iowa, all of whom were present at the funeral. Also three sisters - Therease and Mrs. Sophia Rang of Hayward, Wisconsin, Mrs. Emma Carlson of Norfolk, Nebraska, and a brother John of Orchard, Nebraska. There were 15 grandchildren, 14 of whom live and also mourn his departure. Funeral services were held at the home in Orchard, Nebr. at 2:00 o'clock and at St. Peter's Lutheran Church south of town at 2:30 o'clock Thursday, conducted by the local minister Rev. P. J. Wirth assisted by Rev. E. O. Schlecht of Tilden. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery near the church beside his wife.
