Mr. Hesselschwardt's jugular vein was severed when he was thrown from the car. In the hospital is Miss Nina Grime, 19, Continental. Barring unforeseen complications she was expected to recover. She suffered a cerebral concussion and multiple abrasions on her face and body. Treated at Defiance hospital and then released were Lester Spangler, 22, 508 Pearl street, broken collar bone and back injuries and his uncle, John Spangler, 20, 214 Pearl street, face and arms scratched and bruised. Hurled Against Flasher Impact of the round-nosed Diesel engine hurled the car against the flasher post east of the track. The post was broke off. Hesselschwardt landed face down on the sidewalk about 20 feet from the flasher base. Miss Grime was thrown about 18 feet east along the tracks. Both Spanglers also were thrown clear of the wreckage. Gilbert J. Sheibley, 103 Grove street, night operator at the B. and O. tower, first at the scene found Hesselschwardt sprawled in a pool of blood apparently dead. Miss Grime was groaning. He said he did not see the two Spanglers. Running back to the tower Sheibley called a doctor and ambulance and telephoned police. Sheibley witnessed the crash. He was on the tower platform to inspect the Shenandoah as she cleared the crossing. He said he clocked the eastbound train past the tower at 2:53 a.m. and then noticed the automobile approaching from Harrison avenue. He said the car was traveling about 15 miles an hour, made no effort to slacken or increase its speed and leisurely drove directly in the path of the stream liner whose speed he estimated at 40 miles an hour. He said flashers were working on both Wabash and B. and O. tracks and that the train was blowing its whistle. Sheibley said he thought for a moment that the car has cleared the tracks. Then he saw sparks fly from the front of the engine. He ran into the tower made his time and clearance notations and then hurried to the crossing. The train, manned by Engineer Brigham Young and Conductor William Hoffman, stopped about half way to the passenger depot. It was delayed 34 minutes. the automobile, property of Hesselschwardt's mother, Mrs. Anna E. Zipfel, was demolished. Part of the cross arm from the signal was driven through it. Part of the door was hurled through the window of the restaurant of Mrs. Julia Davison. Police officers here said they were informed Miss Grime and Hesselschwardt were at a Defiance beer parlor earlier in the evening. They were advised that when the couple left there, they picked up the Spanglers, and they went for a ride. Hesselschwardt was 22 years old Friday. (March 7, 1941) His body has been taken to Smith Brothers funeral home. Services will be from Marysdale Catholic church at 9 a.m. Monday, Rev. Robert Knoepfle in charge, with interment in the church cemetery. He was born in Tiffin township, March 7, 1919 and had always lived a half mile north of the Marysdale church. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Zipfel; three half-brothers, Herbert, Howard and Daniel Zipfel, all at home; and three grandparents, Mrs. Mary Batt, Tiffin township and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hesselschwardt, Washington township.
