Description	:	Carolina "Lena" Schnathorst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Schnathorst, was born in Malaka Township, Jasper County, Iowa, on November 10, 1868. On December 12, 1894, she was married to Fred Petermeier and they began their married life on the farm three miles east of Baxter, now occupied by the Otis Dodd family. Read More	Carolina "Lena" Schnathorst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Schnathorst, was born in Malaka Township, Jasper County, Iowa, on November 10, 1868. On December 12, 1894, she was married to Fred Petermeier and they began their married life on the farm three miles east of Baxter, now occupied by the Otis Dodd family. Here they continued to reside until about seven years ago, when they moved to the next farm south. This was the family home at the time of Mrs. Petermeier's death from a paralytic stroke at the Methodist Hospital at Des Moines on April 9, 1935. At the time of her death Mrs. Petermeier had reached the age of 66 years, 4 months, and 29 days. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Petermeier five daughters and three sons, of whom one son, Paul, died in infancy. Those who, with the bereaved husband and father, survive to mourn the loss of Lena are John Petermeier of Newton; Anna (Mrs. Otis) Dodd of Baxter; Elnora (Mrs. Spraque) Quinlan of Longview, Washington; Clarence Petermeier of Melbourne; Lela Petermeier and Ida (Mrs. E.H.) Carlson of Des Moines; and Doris Petermeier at home; also eight grandchildren. Of Lena's brothers and sisters, two sisters: Bertha Stork of Newton, and Amelia Korte of Melbourne; and four brothers: William Schnathorst of Frazee, Minnesota; Henry Schnathorst of Moorehead, Minnesota; Herman Schnathorst of Newton; and Carl Schnathorst of Huron, South Dakota, survive. Three sisters: Louise Lehmann, Lydia Frederika "Reka" Damman, and [?]; and two brothers: August Schnathorst and Fred Schnathorst preceded her in death. Mrs. Petermeier was confirmed in the Lutheran Reformed Church at the age of 14 and throughout her life lived as a sincere and devoted Christian. Her life was given to the service of her family, and her highest joy was found in ministering to their welfare and happiness. She toiled for them, she planned for them, she prayed for them. On the altar of the family life she daily laid her life and strength as a living sacrifice for those whom she loved. Her husband and her children "rise up and call her blessed", and will ever hold her in loving remembrance. She has finished her task on earth and has gone to receive the welcoming words of her Master, "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord". Lena died of diabetes on Tuesday, April 9, 1935, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines where she had been a patient since Saturday. She had been a patient in the hospital earlier in the year and had been home several weeks when it was found necessary to return her to the hospital. Funeral services for Carolina Schnathorst Petermeier were held Saturday afternoon, April 13, 1935, at 2 p.m. Brief rites were conducted at the Petermeier home two miles east of town with further rites from the Community Congregational Church in Baxter by the Rev. B. W. Northrop. Assisting in the services was the Rev. D. E. Bosma of the Bethany Reformed Church. Interment was in the Bethany Reformed Cemetery. Music was furnished by Mrs. Clara Lowderbaugh, Mrs. E.S. Schroyer, C. E. Davey, and Guy Hardenburgh, with Mrs. e.J. Goodwin at the piano. Songs used were "Going Down the Valley" and "Sweet Bye and Bye". Mrs. Schroyer sang "Going Home" in a vocal solo. Pallbearers were six nephews.
