Aged 76 years one month and 26 days. Deceased was born in Belmont County, Ohio, August 10, 1806. Her maiden name was Caroline Cloyd, married Hiram Smith October 29, 1829, lived in her native county until the year 1838. Removed to Washington County, Ohio. About twelve years after their removal to their home in Washington County her husband was accidently killed by the falling of a tree. He was called without moment’s warning but he was fully prepared to go Was a bright and burning light in the M.E. church until the angel of death called him home. Deceased remained with her family on the old homestead some four more years then removing to Wayne County, Iowa, commenced keeping house again in her western home and kept house until the marriage of her youngest daughter to P. R. Miner some 17 years ago. Since that she has made her home with her children. Sister Smith had 6 children, two have gone before to greet her in the spirit land. Angeline and Romeo A.A. Smith, Mrs. Rinker, Mrs. Curry and Mrs. Miner were all present during their mother’s sickness and to receive a mother’s blessing. Their loss is her eternal gain. Sister Smith gave her heart to the Saviour in early life and has been a member of the M.E. church near 55 years. When sister Smith and family moved to Washington County, Ohio there were no church organizations and only four members in the neighborhood, but that little band of four organized a society and it grew to be a strong society under the blessing of God and the leadership of brother Smith. Often has the weary itinerant preacher found home under the hospitable roof of mother Smith. She has often expressed herself that these days were the most glorious on account of the outpouring of the spirit of God on her neighbors and the joy that the she felt within her soul. During her nine weeks of sickness while nearing her eternal home her views of heaven were bright and clear. Joy was in her heart illuminating her countenance with a celestial radiance with the prospect of soon seeing her dear Saviour face to face.
