Fairfield Ledger May 19, 1897, Page 3, Column 6 Mrs. Caroline C. Cowan was born April 3d, 1928, in Allegheny county, Penn., and died at her home in Libertyville Sunday evening, May 9th, 1897. March 11, 1852, she was united in marriage to James Cowan and a few days later started for Iowa and settled at Winchester in Van Buren county, and a year later moved to Jefferson county where she remained until her death. Her maiden name was Christy. She grew up in the atmosphere of a christian home and was carefully trained and instructed by religious parents. Her father was a ruling elder in the Presbyterian church. She became a christian when a child, and about the age of 10 years she united with the Presbyterian church. When very young she became a teacher in the Sabbath school, and nearly all her life was an efficient infant class teacher. Numbers of persons testify that they received their first religious impressions while pupils in her class. Mrs. Cowan was a woman of deep purity and inflexible integrity. Her ever constant religious life impressed very deeply those who knew her best. She was always attentive to the sick and faithful in every department of christian work. This good woman has finished her course, kept the faith and entered into rest. The church and community have sustained a great loss, and her companions and friends feel deeply their great bereavement.
