Mr. James COWAN died in the Jefferson County Hospital, October 29, 1912. He was born April 11, 1829, at Irvin, Pa.... He came to Libertyville, Iowa, in 1852 from Pennsylvania. He has been twice married, his second wife living at Allerton, Iowa. He leaves to mourn his loss one sister, Mrs. C. B. SMITH of Norristown, Penn., and two brothers, C.T. of Spokane, Wash., and W.E. of Libertyville, besides an adopted daughter, Mrs. Anna WARNER of Denver, Colo.... Mr. COWAN was drafted (Oct. 6, 1864) for the war, but only went as far as Keokuk, where he was taken sick and entered the hospital. When he recovered he returned home. (Discharged 29 May 1865 at Davenport, Iowa) Member Presbyterian Church... His funeral will be held at the Presbyterian Church Friday at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. Hinkhouse of Fairfield. James Cowan died in the Jefferson County hospiral, this city, October 29th. He had been ill and alone for some time and was removed to this institution in the hope that his health might be restored. Mr. Cowan was born in Westmoreland county Penn., April 11th, 1829, and grew to manhood there. He was married to Caroline Christy in 1852 and the young people immediately came to Iowa, locating in Jefferson county, near Libertyville. They resided there continuously until the death of the wife, May 9th, 1897. Mr. Cowan was again married, to Amanda Dougherty, who survives him. He was a soldier of the Civil war, but was never assigned to company or regiment. Mr. Cowan became a member of the Presbyterian church in young manhood and was active in its work. In a life of half a century in Jefferson oounty he had formed a wide circle of acquaintance, and it is safe to say that no man stood in higher esteem. He was the soul of honor, his probity was never called into question, and his kindly manner and the friendly interest he ever manifested in the affairs of others gave him the highest standing in the community. The body was interred in the Fall cemetery at Libertyville the 1st inst, Rev. J. F. Hinkhouse conducting the funeral services.
