Because her DOD was engraved wrong, certain assumptions made on several Ancestry family trees about the birth/ages of their children may well be off by at least one year, if based on how old they were perceived to be when she died. Some estimates may be within the margin of error, but other estimates may be in error as a result of using the wrong DOD for Caroline. Married surnames of the daughters omitted at this time - some had multiple marriages, or need further research for clarification. Caroline's obituary in the Fairfield Ledger used both "Mathews" and "Matthews" for the married surname, which obviously can confuse family researchers using census and other record searches to track down this family. Researchers should be aware of both variations. Will use "Mathews" for this memorial per the headstone inscription. Neither William nor Caroline have death records entered for them in Jefferson county, not uncommon for rural areas in the early 1900's. Their marriage record of 1878 does not provide the names of Caroline's birth parents. ---------- Fairfield Ledger Wednesday, December 26, 1900 Death of Mrs. MATHEWS Caroline, wife of W. J. N. MATHEWS, died at her home south of this city, in Cedar township, Friday. She was born in Lawrence county, Ill., and was in the fiftieth year of her age. She was married January 17th, 1876 (sic - January 24, 1878, per county marriage records, #4873), and was the mother of eleven children, all of whom are living. Mrs. MATTHEWS (sic) united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Birmingham four years ago, and her life was wholly consistent with its teachings. She was a great sufferer during her final illness, but her faith triumphed over her sufferings. The sympathy of the community will go out to the stricken husband and family. The remains were interred Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. F. Magill of this city conducting the funeral services. ---------- Note: This part of this memorial was updated on March 30, 2014 - For reasons not clear, the DOD inscription for Caroline was not engraved correctly. Although it reads "Nov. 22, 1901", her obituary had not been found in microfilm record searches by previous cemetery researchers. By a fluke of coincidence in searching for the obituary for someone else, this contributor found Caroline's obituary as published in the Fairfield Ledger. The problem became obvious - the obituary was published on December 26, 1900, a Wednesday. Noting that her death took place the previous Friday, that tidbit of information drastically changes the DOD from Nov. 22, 1901 to December 21, 1900. At this point, this contributor is keeping the DOB as engraved on the headstone, since it wasn't clearly challenged by the obituary. The DOD on this memorial is now being changed to December 21, 1900. Interesting how finding an obituary can push back the DOD and clearly demonstrate that the headstone inscription was engraved in error (although the publication date is not shown on the obituary shown as a photo on this memorial, it was, indeed, published on December 26, 1900. There were two other obituaries close by and their obituaries are correct for the December 1900 timeline). It may well be that the inscriptions for William and Caroline were done at the same time by the same engraver; William died on Nov. 21, 1905, so perhaps when it came time for Caroline's inscription to be done the engraver accidently used the same "Nov. 21" for her, and somehow came up with 1901 instead of 1900 for the year of death.
