Shurtleff Loses Life While Trying to Save Home from Destruction by Fire A human life was taken in the early morning fire at the H. B. Shurtleff home in this city last Monday at 8 o'clock. Mrs. Shurtleff was the victim, and though her lifeless body was recovered in a second story room of the home, forty minutes after the fire was discovered, it was burned beyond recognition. It was one of the worst tragedies ever occurring in this city, and the picture of a devoted husband and daughter standing by, watching the flames devour the home, knowing at the same time that their loved one was a victim, yet powerless to go to the resuce, was one that will long live in the memory of those who were present and watched the destruction of property and life. Our people were just beginning their day's labors last Monday morning when the fire alarm sounded. The hour was eight o'clock. The first report was that the Truax elevator was burning. A little later it was learned that the blaze was at the Shurtleff home just under the hill in the west part of the city. The firemen hastened to the scene and soon had a stream of water pouring into the building. The word had already been passed around that Mrs. Shurtleff was still in the house, upstairs. By this time, however, flames were breaking through the roof and the entire upper story was a seething mass. There was no possible chance to locate the body until the blaze had been conquered. This required thirty minutes or more. Then it was that one of the firemen found the aged lady on the floor close to the bed. It was evident that she had endeavored to get to a window in the east part of the house and was overcome by smoke before reaching it. The story of the tragedy is soon told. Mrs. Shurtleff and daughter, Mrs. C. W. Young, were engaged in doing the family washing last Monday morning. The washing was under way in a shed close by. Glancing up from their work the ladies discovered that the kitchen was in flames. They started towards the house, and Mrs. Shurtleff, grabbing up a pail of water, startted upstairs. The daughter warned her not to do so, but the mother did not realize the danger and evidently believed that she could check the flames. A stovepipe, not a brick chimney, runs from the kitchen range up through the floor above and out through the roof. It was no doubt Mrs. Shurtleff's thought that by pouring water from above down around the stove pipe the fire could be put out. But once inside the door in the upstairs room, she must has been overcome immediately with smoke and this so bewildered her that she could not retrace her steps down stairs. The daughter endeavored to reach the mother, but flames were already bursting from doors and windows and there was no chance. Neighbors hurried to the home, and when they were informed that Mrs. Shurtleff was being burned to death they exerted every effort to reach her, but were driven back by the flames. The firemen, too, sought to locate the woman, but could only wait until the blaze had been put out. Then it was that the body was found close to the bed in the east room and was close to the window when she fell. Tenderly the body was lifted through the window, wrapped in a blanket and lowered to the ground and removed to a neighbor's home close by. Later it was removed to the undertaking parlors, and from there to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kutzler. One daughter, Mabel Shurtleff, was summoned from Pierre, arriving Tuesday morning. Mrs. Hart of Centreville reached the city Monday afternoon, and the son Frank came from Sioux City that day. The daughter, Mrs. C. W. Young, who resides at Carthage, had been visiting her parents. At the time the fire broke out, the father was at the courthouse looking after his duties as janitor. Friends hurried to him, but when he started for home it was not with the knowledge that his companion of many years was a victim of the flames. The horrifying fact was told him all too soon, and it was then that friends were obliged to detain him from rushing into the burning building to his own doom. No insurance was carried on the house or contents. Carried Evans was born in Albany, N.Y., February 11, 1847. Her parents removed to Galena, Ill., in an early day, and on October 12, 1865, she was united in marriage to Henry B. Shurtleff at Mendota, Ill. In the spring of 1867 they came to Clay county, S.D., the husband filing on a homestead in Fairview township, now known as the Sharlock Bruyer farm. After a few years' residence on the farm they came to the city, where they have since resided. This good woman is survived by the husband and five children, Mrs. C. W. Young of Carthage, S.D., Mrs. W. B. Hart of Centreville, S.D., Miss Mabel Shurtleff, a teacher in the Pierre, S.D. schools, Frank J. Shurtleff of Sioux City, and Chester H. Shurtleff of Vermillion. All members of the family circle were preent at the funeral services, which were held from the Episcopal church Tuesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. James Henderson. J. H. Shurtleff and daughter, Mrs. E. W. Purkiss, brother and niece of the sorrowing father, were also present at the last sad rites. The remains were laid to rest in Bluff View cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community will be extended to this pioneer citizen and the five children.
