Read More	(Harlan County Journal - Alma, Nebraska - 16 Jan 1964) OBITUARY Carrie Stevens Sloan Carrie Stevens Sloan, the youngest of eight children of Gardner and Maria Kelly Stevens was born October 30, 1874 at Fort Ann, New York. She passed away in Holdrege, Nebraska, January 5, 1964 at the age of 89 years, two months, and six days. She came with her parents, two brothers and three sisters to Fairmont, Nebraska, in the spring of 1878, one brother and one sister having preceded her in death in Fort Ann, New York. ?They homesteaded near Fairmont, Nebraska, and here one brother and two sisters died in the fall of 1878 during a diphtheria epidemic. Carrie, with her parents, brother Frank and sister Fannie, moved to Ragan, in Harlan County, Nebraska, in 1881. It was in Harlan County that she spent the remainder of her life, until making her home at the Christian Homes, Holdrege, Nebraska, about four years ago. She united with the Christian Science Church in 1908 and was faithful until her death. On November 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Benjamin F Sloan. Carrie, or "Auntie" as she was known to many nieces, nephews and countless friends, spent 30 years as Deputy and County Clerk of Harlan County, Nebraska. Although for many years afflicted with deafness and a crippling of her and feet, "Auntie" always had a smile and helping hand for anyone who crossed her path and she asked nothing in return. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and sisters and her husband. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and a great host of friends. Officiating was Rev. Joe Baer. Soloist was Mrs Dale Guthrie accompanied by Mrs Harvey Walden on the organ. Casket bearers were her grand nephews. Final resting place was Freewater Cemetery, Ragan, Nebraska. Services were held from the Zulauf Chapel in Alma, Thursday. =============== Carrie (Stevens) Sloan is the daughter of Gardner & Maria (Kelley) Stevens and sister of Fannie (Stevens) Sloan. Following the death of her sister, Mrs "Fanny" Sloan, Carrie Stevens married Benjamin Frank Sloan sometime after 1944. Carrie had been the Deputy County Clerk of Harlan County in 1900 and worked in the County Clerk's office in Alma around 1910.
