Read More	Carroll G Cordes PFC US Army World War II Jun 6 1923 Nov 21 1994 Purple Heart Cayo was the 5th child of Henry and Elsie Cordes, and born on the family farm one mile east of Scribner. He was baptized, confirmed, and a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner. He attended St. Peter's Lutheran School through the eighth grade, then Scribner High School, graduating in 1940. In 1942 Cayo worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, laboring to construct the Army Air Corps base located south and east of Scribner. In February of 1943 he was inducted into the Army. His basic training was at Camp Roberts, CA. with addtional training in Renton, WA. and Camp Gruber, OK. He was then shipped to France and fought in the Rhineland Campaign of the European Theater. On January 13, 1945 at Koengsbruck, France he was wounded in battle by shrapnel from a German mortar. He earned the Purple Heart. Several of his unit were killed by the same mortar. After being honorably discharged from the US Army at Camp Roosevelt, Mourmelon, France he returned to the States. In the fall of 1941, Carroll met Rachel Christensen, the English teacher at Scribner High School. After the war, Carroll and Rachel were married on October 6, 1946 in Oakland, NE. They settled in Scribner and raised four sons; Randy (Paulette), Philip (Jeanette), Jack (Barb), Scott (Lora)Cordes. When Cayo returned from the war to Scribner, he and his two brothers, Leroy and Raymond, operated the Cordes' Brothers Grocery until January 1, 1979 at which time a fire destroyed the building and contents. Cayo then operated the Cordes Construction business. Cayo was an active member of the Scribner Volunteer Fire Dept. (1948-1982) and an honorary member until his death. He served as chief 1957-1968, and in 1960 he was president of the Northeast Nebraska Volunteer Fireman's Association. In 1961 he became president of Nebraska Fire Chiefs Association, and in 1965 he was awarded the Ak-Sar-Ben Award of Merit for Outstanding Firemanship. Cayo was the Scribner Civil Defense Director for 25 years and the Scribner weather observer for the National Oceanic Weather Service for 31 years.
