Cassandra Mayberry was born in Hamilton County, Illinois, Jan. 17, 1849, and died August 21, 1938, at the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 4 days, at her home, three miles west of Adams, Neb. Cassandra Mayberry was born in Hamilton County, Illinois, Jan. 17, 1849, and died August 21, 1938, at the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 4 days, at her home, three miles west of Adams, Neb. When but a child, the family moved from Illinois to Neosha, Kansas. She went through the perils of the civil war, her father joining the army. Leaving the mother and children to run the home. She was married to Frederick A. Harper July 18, 1870, at Erie, Kansas. Seven children blessed this union, two dying in infancy. The first 17 years of their married life was spent in Illinois. In 1887 they, being of a pioneer spirit, decided to move west and located in Jefferson county, where they lived until 1893, when they bought the farm home 3 miles west of Adams, where " Grandma Harper" , as she was known far and wide has lived for the past forty years. On July 18, 1920, was the golden anniversary of their marriage, and father Harper passed away in October following. Many years ago Grandma united with the Free Will Baptist Church at Grand View, Rev. Wolfe being the pastor, and has lived a consistent Christian life. Grandma was a lover of all nature, especially of birds and flowers , and her home and family has always been her chief thought, a hospitable home, and was always ready to help a friend and neighbor. Grandma has lived to a ripe old age and has been ready to go for a long time, and has been growing more feeble the past six months, just waiting for the Masters call. She leaves to mourn her death five children, Mrs. Walter Barmore, Mrs. Fred Perry, and John Harper of Adams, Ira Harper of Hollenberg, Kansas, Mrs. Alva Robb of Madrid, Neb. Two sisters and a brother and a host of nephews and nieces. She has twenty -nine great-grandchildren, making fifty -four direct descendants. Funeral services were held in the Grand View church Wednesday afternoon at two thirty p.m. Rev. Wolfe, officiating , he having babtisted and received her into the church thirty years ago that day. Pallbearers were grandsons, Ray Porter, Kirby Harper, Duane and Caryl Perry, William Oltman, and James Spellman. Burial in the Highland Cemetery.
