Description	:	Catharine Marvin Baker Reeves died at the age of 92 1/2 years at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.M. Garrett, near Cummings, Iowa, November 1, 1902. She was twice married. Her first husband, Peter Baker (son of Daniel and Helen Baker of New York State), died in 1842 after they had had seven children. On 20 February 1845 she married Lewis W. Reeves in Indiana. Her first husband, Peter Baker (son of Daniel and Helen Baker of New York State), died in 1842 after they had had seven children. On 20 February 1845 she married Lewis W. Reeves in Indiana. To them were born five children -- three daughters: Phebe, Esther, Angeline and two sons: John and Lewis M. Mrs. Reeves had been a member of the Baptist church for over 60 years. When she died she left six children, 45 grandchildren, and more than 70 great grandchildren. In 1897 she had more than a dozen great-great grandchildren. She was buried beside her husband, Lewis, in Norwalk cemetery, November 4, 1902, Rev. Thornbue of M.E. church officiating. [From the obituary.] The story is told by Catharine's descendants that when she lived in Wabash County, Indiana, she was often called upon to go with the local Miami Indians to care for a sick child, a problematic birth, or a long siege of smallpox within the tribe. Her daughters Angeline and Mary would watch their mother ride off on horseback with her black medicine bag tied to the saddle horn and accompanied by five or six painted warriors. When the Wabash River was running bank to bank, Catharine and her Indian companions would grip the necks of their mounts as the horses swam the swollen river. Several days (or weeks) later, Catharine and the warriors would return, her horse loaded down with meat, berries, and gifts from appreciative Indians.
