Her father was the seventh Guillaume Couture, the first of whom was a distinguished hero of early Nouveau France. He worked under the Jesuite explorers, when their entire group was captured in 1642 by the Iroquois. They were subsequently tortured, and most died. But Guillaume Couture was seen as different than the others and was taken into the tribe. He was put into a marriage with the widow of the man who he had killed during the siege. She later approached the elders and asked that he be allowed to return to his own people in Quebec. He became a leader of the early colony when he was appointed the Captain of the Militia of Pointe-Lévy, a town which he himself had founded. Catherine grew up in the Trois-Rivieres region of Quebec. She married Regis Bouthillette on October 18, 1831 at La Présentation, Les Maskoutains, Québec, Canada. They were blessed with at least seven children who were born in Quebec, Vermont and Michigan. During a particularly bad Quebecois economy, her husband went south into the lumber fields of St. Albans, Vermont where he worked his way up to foreman. She spent much of her time with her children down in the lumber camps during the summer and returned to Trois-Rivieres during many of the winters. When her husband was approached to help start up a lumber industry in the Saginaw Bay region of Michigan, a pregnant Catherine packed up her children and headed west into a rugged new world. Along the way, the family stayed in Hamtramck, Michigan for the birth of their youngest son, Henry, until he was strong enough to make the rest of the voyage north. Catherine's death is only vaguely documented. Her actual date of death is not recorded, but in 1867 her husband purchased ten plots in the new St. Patrick's cemetery. All of the plots were along the edge of a path. When automobiles started driving through the old section of the cemetery, the memorials were all knocked down and destroyed. It took the help of the cemetery sextons to locate the plots through the financial records, as the earliest burials were not all documented in the main records.
