Description	:	Regis was the son of Pierre Bouthillette and Marie-Genevieve Dompierre-dite-St-Martin. Early in his childhood, his beloved mother died and his father carried on as a single parent, with the assistance of several extended family members. When his father remarried, his stepmother filled a crucial role in his life. Early in his childhood, his beloved mother died and his father carried on as a single parent, with the assistance of several extended family members. When his father remarried, his stepmother filled a crucial role in his life. When the economy in Quebec became precarious, he went down to the lumber fields of St. Albans, Vermont, less than 30 miles from their home, and would spend months working hard, while still having time for his family to visit. From all reports, he was well-respected by the lumber companies and moved up to a foreman position. That allowed him to get more skilled trades and get away from the dangerous work of cutting down monstrous virgin lumber, with the ever-present risk of a tree falling wrong and taking out him or his fellow lumberers. As the records show, a certain "Col. Roberts" was interested in starting a new lumber operation at the mouth of the Saginaw river in central Michigan. At the time, only a couple of settlers and the Ojibwe tribe lived in the area. The first "white" child was about to be born at the settlement that would become Bay City. Roberts hired Regis to move to the young settlement as part of the organizing team. By 1848, plans were progressing and the family relocated to Hamtramck, just outside of Detroit. They would live there, and son Henry would be born there, as Regis went north for much of the year to start clearing land and putting in the infrastructure to allow a full-time operation to begin. By 1850, the burgeoning family was the first European family to move en masse into the lands north of the Lake St Clair settlements. Regis did well and was able to save up the money to buy a hundred acres of land in Hampton township that had been clear cut. He and his sons used their spare time to remove stones and stumps, eventually creating a successful farm with a large home for the family. There would be some sad times, too. His beloved Caroline died sometime in 1867. He purchased ten burial plots in the new--now old--Saint Patrick's cemetery. There was possibly a second marriage, this time to "Archange Couture", who may have been a relative of Catherine's, but the records do not exist to help us learn anything about the woman. Son Regis, Jr/Richard, would die in a bizarre accident in West Springfield, Massachusetts while walking along the tracks as he made his way to visit Regis' brothers and their families in Springfield. There are also any number of names used through the years to document this man. Sometimes Regis, sometimes Richard. Sometimes Bouthillette or Boutillier, or even Boutyette nearer the end of his life. But they are all the same man. Chalk it up to a complicated name and the attempts of a man to assimilate into an American culture.
