Mrs. Catherine Croker, a composer, organist and teacher, of 225 North Central Ave., died at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday [14 May]. She had been a patient in Canonsburg General Hospital for the past two weeks. Mrs. Croker was the wife of Raymond N. Croker, whom she married in Canonsburg, March 20, 1930. She was born in Canonsburg November 2, 1897, a daughter of the late J. Wilbur and Catherine J. McNutt Munnell, and had spent her entire life in that community. Serving as organist of the First Presbyterian Church of Canonsburg for more than 30 years, Mrs. Croker also worked as a composer and teacher. Many of her compositions have been published and performed locally and throughout the country. Her compositions are both sacred and secular, and included choral works, songs, and pieces for piano, organ and violin. She had been a member of the Tuesday Music Club of Pittsburgh, and for over 10 years was active in the composers' division of the club. Many of her works have been used on club programs. Marshall Bidwell, organist at Carnegie Hall, Pittsburgh, has played many of her works on his Sunday afternoon organ programs. Mrs. Croker studied under such well-known men as Dr. Charles N. Boyd, Dr. Harvey Gaul and Dr. T. Carl Whitmer. She also had a large class of piano students in Canonsburg. Three of her most popular songs are: "Lighten Our Darkness," "Dawn of Peace" and "Expectation," which won a state prize one year ago. She is survived by her husband and two children, Donald Paul Croker, Pittsburgh; and Jean, widow of Roger Raduns, Tampa, Fla. Also surviving are three grandsons, one brother, James W. Munnell, Canonsburg, and a sister, Helen, wife of William L. Jenkins, Canonsburg. Friends are being received from 2 to 4 p.m., and 7-9 p.m. at the W. Leonard Griffith Funeral Home where services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in charge of the Rev. Daniel B. Eveland, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Oak Spring Cemetery."
