Her parents were Laura Evelyn Stevens and Charles Clark, and she was one of four children. She grew up in Crosby ND. After finishing her secondary education, she attended Normal School at Minot and received her teaching certificate in 1922. Her parents were Laura Evelyn Stevens and Charles Clark, and she was one of four children. She grew up in Crosby ND. After finishing her secondary education, she attended Normal School at Minot and received her teaching certificate in 1922. Janice then came to MT and taught schools at Hingham for the next few years. She met Charles J. Mikulecky in the Black Coulee community south of Rudyard. Janice continued teaching for a short while at a country school near the farm, then began raising her family. They lived and worked on the farm until 1979, when they retired and moved into Rudyard. Charles died in 1981. Janice remained at home in Rudyard until June of 1984, when declining health took her to the rest home in Chester. Recently she was admitted to the Liberty County Hospital where she died on the evening of Mon., Oct 12th. Janice was 83 years of age. She was a past member of the Hingham Methodist Church. In more recent years she had been active in the Methodist Women's group in the Inverness Methodist Church. In her younger years in ND she was a member of the Eastern Star. After coming to MT she joined the Rebeccah Lodge of Hingham. She had also been active in the Black Coulee Home Demonstration Club, the Black Coulee Farmer's Union, the Liberty County Hospital Guild, and the Democratic Women's organization. Janice had many hobbies over the years. She lived to crochet, and had done many lovely tablecloths and quilts for family members. She also enjoyed embroidery, quilting and knitting (she knitted hundreds of dishcloths at the nursing home and gave them away). Janice played the paino, had a nice singing voice, and her favorite flower was the peony. She was a good cook and her family will never forget her wonderful breads, coffee cakes, her glorified rice, and her chocolate calke with brown sugar frosting! Janice's father was a banker with strong political convictions, and she often told of the time when President Taft spent the night at their home back in ND. It seems that Taft made a few long-distance calls and later sent the family a two-dollar bill to cover the expense. That $2 remained as a family keepsake until recently when it was forwarded to a federal museum for posterity. Another special memory dated back to 1977 when Janice and Charles vacationed in Hawaii. Their health was still relatively good at the time so they thoroughly enjoyed the trip to "paradise". At the time of Charles' death, they had been happily married for 55 years. Janice adjusted well to her move to the nursing home. She became best of friends with her roommate, Amelia Will, who became the sister she never had. In 1986 she was selected as nursing home resident of the year and spent a day in Helena with the Governor. Janice's family includes 3 daughters, Mrs. Tony (Jean) VanRisswick of Ocean Park, WA, Mrs. Shirley Kroshus of Hawthorne, NV, and Mrs. Roy (Joyce) Waples of Colstrip; a son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Pat of Rudyard; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death not only by her husband and parents, but also by her son in infancy and by 3 brothers (Donald, Douglas and Porter Clark). Funeral services were held at 9 a.m., Sat., Oct 17th, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rudyard with pastor Jim Sheldon officiating. Special remembrances and comments were shared by Janice's grandson, Jim Kroshus, and a poem was read by a friend, Helena McCann. Special vocal music by Terry Stevenson included "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross", and Iris White served as organist. Palbearers were friends and neighbors: Ralph Sylte, Vic Gatzmeier, Lloyd Diemert, Gordon Twedt, Allen Twedt and Russ Twedt. Memorial bearers were all of Janice's grandchildren. Following burial in the Rudyard Cemetery, a luncheon was given at the church. Funeral arrangements were by Rockman Chapel, Chester.
