Read More	Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), July 1, 1915, p. 1, col. 3 PIONEER WOMAN PASSED AWAY Mrs. Catherine Garhan Died Saturday, June 26, in Omaha Mrs Catherine Garhan, of David City, one of the early pioneer women of Butler county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jack Finch, in Omaha, on last Saturday, June 26, about 5 a.m. Mrs. Garhan had never fully recovered from a critical illness with pneumonia early last winter and the effects of this sickness, together with diabetes, which she had had for some time, was the cause of her death. She was confined to her bed only a couple of days. Mrs. Garhan would have observed her 77th birthday anniversary on August 16. She was born in Uray, County Armagh, Ireland. Her maiden name was Catherine Rice. For 43 years Mrs. Garhan had been a resident of Butler county. She came here with her husband, Patrick Garhan, and children in 1868. They lived on land 2 1/2 miles from Rising City for several years and then moved to a farm one mile from Rising City. Sixteen years ago the Garhan home was changed to David City and the year following Mr. Garhan died. Mrs. Garhan had lived in the United States since she was eight years of age, her parents coming here at that time and locating in Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Garhan's marriage was performed in Hennepin, Ill. Six children, four sons and two daughters, survive Mrs. Garhan. They are James and Henry Garhan of Rising City, Thomas Garhan of David City, William Garhan and Mrs. Jack Finch of Omaha and Mrs. T. E. Fenlon of Sioux City, Iowa. Two daughters, Mrs. Mary Sheets and Mrs. Elizabeth McDonald, are dead. She also leaves 14 grandchildren. The body of Mrs. Garhan was brought to David City Monday evening and lay in state in the Garhan home in North David City until Wednesday morning when funeral services were held. The services were held at 9 o'clock in St. Mary's Catholic church. Requiem Solemn high mass was solemnized by Rev. Father Boll, assisted by Rev. Father Cronin of Center and Rev. Father Hoffman of Luxemburg. Requiem high mass was sung by five young ladies, Mrs. Leo Delaney and Misses Mae Delaney, Agnes Hilger, Anna Litty and Lillian Styskal. The pall-bearers were Joseph Brochtrup, P. F. Fenlon, Herman Ficke, M. J. Holland, George Zahler and Gilbert Zegers. Finch in Omaha, occurred the death of Mrs. Catherine Garhan from diabetis. Monday evening the body was brought to her home in this city where it lay in state until Wednesday morning, when funeral services were held from the St. Mary's Catholic church at 9 o'clock. Rev. Father Boll, conducting them, assisted by Father Wagoner and Father Hoffman of Bellwood. Catherine Rice was born in Ireland on August 16, 1838. When nearly eight years of age she with her parents came to America settling in Hennepin, Illinois. Here she grew to young womanhood and was married to Mr. Patrick Garhan. Her marriage taking place nearly fifty years ago. Eight children came to this union but only six survive their mother. They are James Garhan and Henry Garhan both of Rising City, Thomas Garhan of David City, Mrs. H. T. Finch of Omaha, Mrs. T. E. Fenlon of Sioux City, Iowa and William Garhan of Omaha. The deceased children were Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. Sheets. Besides the children Mrs. Garhan leaves 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. All were present at the funeral except the three McDonald children. From Illinois the deceased with her family came to Butler County, Nebraska forty-three years ago. They moved to a farm near Rising City, here they resided until sixteen years ago when they came to David City and one year later Mr. Garhan passed to the Beyond. In the passing of Mrs. Garhan Butler County loses one of its oldest residents and David City loses one of its most respected citizens. She was loved by all who knew her and her friends were many, as was shown by the large attendance at the burial services both from David City and Rising City. The pall bearers were Messrs. P. F. Fenlon, M. J. Holland, Herman Ficke, George Hilger Sr., George Zahler and Gilbert Zaggers. All of the Garhan children were in attendance at the funeral. Others coming from away were T. E. Fenlon and three sons, Frances, Paul and James Jerome, from Sioux City, Iowa; Jack Finch and two daughters, Misses Wauneta and Alice, from Omaha; also Thomas Fox from Omaha; William Fox from Columbus, and Miss Winnie, Charles and William Sheets from Spaulding, grandchildren of Mrs. Garhan. Some thirty persons, relatives, friends and old-time neighbors of Mrs. Garhan, were in attendance at the funeral. Mrs. Garhan's friends were many and loyal. She possessed a cheerful and kind disposition and such likable characteristics that all who came in cntact with her became staunch friends of hers. By her untiring devotion and unselfishness she was greatly endeared by her children and neighbors.
