Mr. Garhan has been in quite poor health for several years but had been able to be up, and around the house and drive out around town, being about in his usual health almost up to his death, and sitting in the rocking chair when he expired. The funeral was held at St. Mary's church at 10 o'clock this morning, Rev. Father Roche conducting the services, after which the remains were taken to the Catholic cemetery for interrment. Mr. Garhan was an old resident of west Butler, having moved to David City about two years ago. He was a highly respected citizen and the heartfelt sympathy of many friends will be extended to the bereaved wife and children, all of whom are grown to manhood and womanhood. May his soul rest in peace. ``````````` Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), August 24, 1900, p. 3, col. 3 AN OLD SETTLER GONE Died, on Tuesday, at about one o'clock, Patrick Garhan, aged 71 years and six months, of Asthma and heart failure. Mr. Garhan was born near Dublin, Ireland, in March, 1829, and immigrated to this country long before the war. For years he worked on the levies of the Mississippi valley, but on the breaking out of the war of the rebellion, he came north and settled in Illinois, where he married. Twenty-eight years ago last Spring he moved to Butler county, Nebraska, and settled in the west part of the county, where he remained until a couple of years ago, when he moved to David City, purchasing the D.D. Bramer property. Mr. Garhan leaves a wife, four sons and two daughters to mourn him. Two daughters preceded Mr. Garhan to the tomb, Mrs. Geo. Sheets and Mrs. McDonald. Mr. Garhan was a hard working, prosperous farmer and stock raiser, and in every sense a substantial business man. Mr. Garhan was a man of few words, and not over demonstrative in his expression of friendship, and yet he enjoyed the company of his friends better than many more demonstrative persons. The funeral took place from St. Mary's Catholic church on Thursday morning at ten o'clock, with Rev. Father Roche administering the rights of the church. Death came to Mr. Garhan very easy, as his wife hardly knew he was gone until the spirit took its departure, though he has been in poor health for the past two years, the family was hardly prepared for the final parting andx was taken thus by surprise.
