Slade, a pioneer resident, departed this life on Wednesday morning after a long and painful illness at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. C. M. Richmond, corner of Broad and Pine streets, this city. Deceased was a native of Le Roy, Genesco County, New York, aged 70 years and 7 months, having been born October 12, 1826. She completed her education at Ingham University in her native town. Catherine V. Tuttle was a younger sister of the late Judge Charles A. Tuttle. She was married in the town of her nativity on April 8, 1845, to Chester L. Slade. They reached California in July 1858 and soon after purchased the well-known "Slade Ranch" one mile and a half north of Auburn. Here she resided until within about 10 years when she joined her children in this city, her husband having died at the ranch in 1868. Thus for a period of nearly 40 years, she was a resident of Auburn. She was a past president of Belmont Relief Corps, a prominent member of the WCTU, and a respected member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Her life passes out as the sacred memory of one who was entirely devoted to her kindred, and in a broader way, to all with whom she came in contact. She had no patience nor palliation for current evils, and consequently her voice was lifted up in protest against them. Her conscience was of that exacting character that whatever purpose was in view, she could never sanction or favor what she held to be questionable amusements. The blood of the Jonathan Edwards family and of "John Brown of Osawatomie" was in her veins, and she had a creditable pride in the fact, that as far as she was personally concerned, it was never tarnished by compromise with wrong of any kind. Yet hers was a charitable nature, and the needy never passed her door unaided. She was a lady of broad intelligence, thorough patriotism, and snow-white character. We cannot look beyond, but we can safely say that of "such spirits are God's ministering angels made." The funeral took place from the late residence on Thursday at 4 PM, under the auspices of Belmont WRC, Rev. W. L. Clark of Benicia, late rector of St. Luke's, as officiating clergyman. Deceased leaves four children: Mrs. F. A. Stone, Irving T. Slade, Mrs. H. H. Richmond, and C. H. Slade, all of this city; a brother, E. D. Tuttle of Safford, Arizona; and a sister, Mrs. C. M. Blain of Newark, New Jersey, besides many other relatives and former fraternal associates to mourn her loss. [Placer Argus, Auburn, Friday, 5-14-1897]
